It may be valve stem seals, they can come adrift from the posts and float with the valves.
I was using about 5-600ml in 5000km with a 300Tdi and found three floating.
Replaced them all and the oil consumption dropped to negligible.
200tdi Defender using some oil.. perhaps 1L every 5,000km, particularly on highway trips. Clutch is getting replaced this week so will check rear main seal.
Can anyone else provide me a check list that I can work my way through?
It ain't a big deal as she's done nearly 300k and trucks along like a beauty but you know the itch you get when these things happen..

Nope.
Rotate the engine to TDC on whatever cylinder you are working on, this stops the valves falling into the cylinder and use a puller type valve spring compressor.
On a petrol engine you use an air adapter and compressed air in a spark plug hole to hold the valves closed but on a Tdi there is no combustion chamber in the head and the valves are square to the piston which holds them up when at TDC.
Definitely was the valve stem seals.. they were like plastic!

Age and oil had made them rock hard.
Thanks for your help Rick!
