    Defender vs 80 series reliability

    Hey everyone,

    Im up north from home and just had a chance to sit in an 80 series land cruiser.

    They are very comfortable and have plenty space for driver and passenger.

    I still love the look of defenders though.

    So anyway, I asked the owned of the 80 series about traveling out west.

    He told me, every four wheel drive when you go 'west' (middle of australia and further from the east coast) all the four wheel drives are Diesels (not petrol - something I also asked about petrol or diesel) and they are all land cruisers.

    His land cruiser is at 580,000 km and still drives like new and wouldn't hesitate to drive to perth tomorrow with it because they just are reliable and just work and everyone west apparently has them.

    To me the whole thing sounded like, Defender is for people that don't mind being stuck and constantly repairing a vehicle while a land cruiser is the thing you do a regular service on and just keep on driving because things don't break on them.

    I understand people see reliability differently... one person may say his car is reliable as long as you service and maintain it regular it works forever. Having said that though, what they 'service and maintain' are things that in another vehicle wouldn't need to be 'maintained' because those things don't give you trouble in the first place.

    So to me reliability is, put key in, drive, do a normal oil change/filter change type service (check plugs etc) and thats it. Not "you need to replace this you need to replace that" that isn't reliable then since you gotta keep buying stuff that should just work.

    So 80 series or defender in Reliability department? (wanting to drive out NT/Kimberleys etc)?

    In my experience they are all about the same. They all have design flaws and their own problems. I always found that the number of trail repairs was substantially higher with the Toyotas. I put this more down to the owners not taking care of them because they drank the reliability kool aid.

    I own and love my D2a But in all seriousness it has been an absolute moneypit and hasn't even come close to being as reliable as ANY of the Toyota 4WD's I own or have owned.
    Having said that even though my D2a is now 14 years old it is the most "refined" 4WD I have ever owned and it is an absolute pleasure to drive.
    All my Toyotas have been reasonably comfortable But I dont get the same "buzz" driving tham as I do when I get behind the wheel of my D2a,They are however incredibly reliable.

    No it isn't But it is still a Landrover with the same quirks and problems as a fender.

    Not really. D2 were very complicated and that was their downfall from a reliability point of view. The Defenders don’t have all the crap that normally fails on a D2.

    The running gear on a D2 is pretty much the same as a fender and thats where I have had reliabillity issues, All the "fancy" stuff has been OK with the exception of the SLS which I replaced with coil springs.
    My dramas have been with the engine, transfer case and diffs mainly, These are areas that I have never had any dramas with my Hilux's and Cruisers.

    Actually it is not. The suspension and axles are completely different. Many of the drivetrains are different as well. Most of the D2 problems are the complex electronics. That was a period I. Time when they had not properly matured.

    I’ve wheeled with many Cruisers and have seen everything break on them from the engines through to the axles. They are no more robust than the Land Rover equivalents.

    30 years of driving I haven’t been flat bed’d once

    HQ Ute
    VC commodore
    40 Series cruiser trayback
    Earlier 80’s hi-lux
    2 door rangie
    300 tdi fender
    TD5 fender

    But the 300tdi fender did hold me up with on side of the road repairs in a number of times. Don’t recall getting tools out for the other cars.
