    non-genuine brake master cylinder failure

I replaced the brake m/cyl on the 130 probably just over a year ago, with a non-genuine part. Yesterday I went to apply the brakes to control a gearchange from low 2nd to low 1st approaching a steep section on a steep-ish downhill, only to have the pedal go ineffectually to the floor multiple times. I had to abandon the braking as I had a couple of friends in the vehicle for whom it was their first-ever 4wd experience and I didn't want them to know we had no brakes!- I used the terrain to control the speed, changed to low 1st and went the rest of the way down the hill in low 1st. Tried the pedal again when we got to the bottom and it had come good, behaving normally since and there is no fluid loss anywhere. Obviously the master cylinder has to go. Wondering if anyone else has experienced this and if it is a known issue with some brands- can't remember off hand who I bought it from but it was a reputable supplier and not in a blue box.

I’ve experienced the same thing, they were britpart though, went through 3 of them all doing the same thing, bypassing at random times. Only got them as I couldn’t get anything else at the time. Maybe the original one could be rebuilt if you can’t find a better brand?

Remember the blue box people don’t make things they just buy the cheapest available and put it in a box
It’s likely they are not the only ones who buy from that supplier

If you can find a TRW one (which seem to be out of stock at the moment.) go with them. Forget the other ones,

Good to know....My 1998 130 brake booster has developed a crack around the master cylinder mounting bolts, so i'm in the market to replace mine.

I just replaced my brake booster

I just replaced mine with the OEM type brake booster from paddock spares in the UK. was easy to fit, and I'm hoping will last over 20 years like the original. If youre doing the job yourself, youre already saving a bundle. best to buy only OEM IMV. most of us don't have time to do the job twice.

I bought a TRW cylinder from TRS. Hopefully the TRW are good quality; the cheapy was life threatening.
My clutch slave cylinder was leaking from the back end so I replaced it too whilst I was at it. The original was Girling. I think that was the worst job I have ever done on this vehicle, with the possible exception of removing and cleaning the EGR valve. Would have paid someone else to do it if I had anticipated what a pig of a job it was.
