Joachim, Did you install the gearbox yourself, or have a shop do it? I like the idea as well of having the upgraded rear bearings as well for a remapped/ overdrive defender, just not sure if the complication of providing parts (gearbox) to a shop is asking for trouble.Quote:

I spoke with Darryl, but didn't know they actually had Ashcroft parts there. He did tell me that they use the same manufacturer bearings as Ashcroft. I don't however think they do the upgrade/ modification of the larger, HD bearing. Darryl is away in SA right now, but when he is back I will ask him about it.Quote:

My workshop (Greame Cooper) were happy with me providing the gearbox. I got them to install it as I wasn't sure about the state of the clutch which needed to be replaced at the same time.Quote:

I know from experience that MR will supply and install the Ashcroft intermediate shaft and cover any warranty problems. The price for the intermediate shaft was about the same price as if i'd imported it direct (including freight).

I would stick to the local guy in case of warranty problems.
Ashcroft are not the be all and end all of gearboxes.
When rebuilding my 110 I bought a recon gearbox off Ashcroft as they claimed to fix the rough 1st to 2nd change (LT77). The gearbox went in the rebuild at the start - it took another 2 yrs to finish the rebuild. I then did a couple of thousand miles on the 'box (with their recommended oil in it) before it started to make nasty noises. At my cost I had the box taken out and sent back to Ashcroft. They found that a bearing had been pressed in too far and cracked the flange of the bearing. This eventually broke off and went off to damage the rest of the box. Apparently "I was lucky" (their words) that they only charged me cost. I then had to pay freight and the garage to put it back in for me.
The 1st to 2nd change is still no better!
I was/am not happy with Ashcroft. I went to them because they had the reputation for being the best - not by my experience

Asked Ashcrofts if they had any idea what to do but they just asked what oil was in it and if I bled the clutch.
It feels as if the detent springs are too strong. Slick fast gear changes , forget it.
As reccomended by them I run the same ATF Dexron 3 in both boxes.. I am going to drop the oil soon and see if anything shows.
Everything else, ATB,s etc I have bought from them have been without a problem.
Did you get MR to do the reco? If so how has the box been? Cheers
