Thanks for reply Big Harold. Seems like I need to look after 5th gear & it's bearing

    Why are you concerned?
Hi DiscoMick, I believe there is a fair bit of difference in power between the TD5 & the Puma. I know my TD5 it's no speed wagon when loaded. Which is OK, I'm happy with that.
Just wondered how it would be with a van on behind.

Also how 5th gear handles the job. Some of the other replies have made good points about the box.

All depends on how much of a rush you are in or your driving style or your expectations

Puma owners might be expecting a little too much from the 2.4 or 2.2.

My old tdi was tweaked and I used to push it pretty hard....I suspect I’d do it a little easier with my TD5, td5 currently has a td5alive tune but I’m considering swapping tunes.

Not really. I think both were around 122bhp stock. Heck, even the 300tdi auto had 122bhp

Tweaked Td5s can keep up with tweaked pumas no problem

    Defender 130 TD5 Towing caravan

Personally and as mentioned already, it’s a small motor and a full 130 is much heavier than most vehicles with bigger engines. In many cases it’s 1/2 tonne up already before adding a van/trailer.
It will do it fine but don’t expect to be “keeping up” with bigger more powerful vehicles.
The aerodynamics of a Defender above 100 hit any engine hard.

The Td5 is a mighty lump of a thing and coupled with an R380 does a great job provided you’re willing to give your clutch leg a good workout 😊

Baby the hell out of 5th gear in a R380....it's an added on cog design wise and is poorly supported by what amounts to a roller skate bearing. Get into 4th on the hills.

    Fair enough.
A Puma has six gears so the gearing is different to a Td5. Also, my 110 has a Steinbauer chip worth up to 20% or 146bhp so it's not the same. I change down if it drops below about 2000 revs in 5th or 6th.
As others have said, don't lug it in fifth, change down and keep it in the power band.
It's not just an LR problem as other brands can also hurt their fifth gear when towing. It's one of the reasons autos are so good for towing.

on the upside being a 130 it should have GREAT stability,,
keep the hitch as close as physically possible to the back axle,, ( Caravan towing Rule No 1)
the lack of ABS may be a concern,, but lots of people towed before ABS was around and didnt automatically die
