    Disabling immobiliser for remote touring

    Hi all,

Has anyone here considered (or already gone ahead) disabling their Puma immobiliser for the sake of not getting stuck in a difficult situation when touring in very remote locations? I keep an external lockbox hidden under my car with a spare FOB and key, however I've heard of cases where wiring for the electric window has perished/aged from door actuations, tripping the immobiliser and disabling the car.

How likely is it to disable the vehicle? If the wiring was damaged wouldn't the vehicle refuse to immobilise when locked, so it could still be opened and started with the key?

Best I've been able to achieve with my Puma is, I can leave the FOB at home and lock the car just using the key. It locks and unlocks with no starting issues. I've left it sitting for a day locked with just the key to test there was no timeout switching the immobilizer back on.

I'm not sure if there are still times when the immobiliser could cause me issues but so far so good (stupid thing to say when I'm heading away remotely in 3 weeks).

When heading away I always bring both FOBS and spare batteries to be safe, but I never use the FOB.

Id love to hear more about this topic and see if anyone has done similar or knows whats the best way to rid it completely.

If I lock mine with the key it unlocks and starts with the key. I don't think the immobiliser works when only locked with the key, or is that wrong?

If a puma is immobilised do you have to enter a four digit code through the drivers door to remobilise the vehicle?

If so, I bought a D2 Td5 immobilised. Having listened to the previous owners story and efforts to resolve the problem, once the garage fixed the problem (replacement computer) i had the garage remove the immobilistion option.

I think I might have done it.

The Puma has an active immobiliser and a passive immobiliser. The active immobiliser is activated by setting the alarm. The alarm is only set by pressing the button on the fob. Using the key to lock only locks the doors and does not set the alarm.

The passive immobiliser sets itself after a short period after you switch the vehicle off, whether it is locked or unlocked.

As I understand it, the status of the immobiliser is shown by the red light on the dashboard, at the bottom of the tacho. If the light is flashing the vehicle is immobilised.

I tried to reset the passive immobiliser using my Iidtool. It can’t actually read the settings in the 10AS so only displays the default values. I changed the setting of the passive immobiliser and reflashed it, but of course the default setting of on is still showing. However my red light now only flashes when I set the alarm, so I may have turned it off.

    Cheers,
    Jon

Why? Do you want to make it easier for it to be stolen?

For a TD5 you can remove the 10AS programming from the ECU.......

I think I’ve asked before if this can be done for the puma and from memory it’s not possible....zithers maybe other ways.

The PATS (passive anti theft system) can be turned off in the 10AS using SDD, I don't know if the Nanocom or others can also do this, I only have SDD. This is a screenshot from a 2012MY Puma.

To communicate with the 10AS using SDD the ignition needs to be off completely, probably the same with other tools.

Once you've done this you could start the car with a screwdriver jammed in the ignition barrel, there is no security in play anymore.

I've had to do this on a couple of Defenders after the battery has gone flat and the 10AS goes nuts, burning out central locking motors and what-not.

Funny enough I got a call on Friday from a workshop in Melbourne about this same thing happening on another 2012MY...

Just FYI the EKA method does not work in the later Defenders, for sure not in a 2012MY, even though there is an EKA code assigned to the cars. Not sure when the functionality was removed but LR removed it at some stage for whatever reason. So IF the 10AS takes a dump, and the PATS is still enabled, there is no plan B, no EKA in later cars.
