    ?Injector failure

Hi All, New to the community as I've just bought my first defender. 2004 td5 130 single cab Ute has done 147000kms.

Literally took ownership last week. Checked the oil which looked pale but was full. Took it on a 300km round trip to test it out and it drove beautifully but 270km in I heard a clacking noise whilst in 5th gear doing 90kmh on a flat section of road. I had just enough time to turn to my wife to ask if that was us, when the clacking got really loud and there was blue/grey smoke billowing out of the exhaust!!!

I quickly pulled over and switched the car off.

No smoke coming from the engine, temperature guage didn't budge, nothing leaking underneath. Tried to restart but it wouldn't turn over

Gave it 5 minutes and she started back up but blew a heap of smoke out the exhaust. The smoke subsided and I revved it a few times and it sounded like it was misfiring.

Spoke to my brother in law who is a diesel mechanic and he thought I may have lost an injector. Assured me it should be fine to limp home, which I did in three stages. Twice the clacking reappeared along with the smoke. Both times I pulled over, switched it off and gave it 5 minutes. Started back up but blew a mountain of smoke upon startup which then settled.

Does anyone have any experience with this issue?

    Cheers

it could be an injector sticking open, a valve not seating or excess oil getting into the intake and with blue/grey smoke Id be more inclined to lean towards oil over diesel being burnt in excess.

pull the hose off of the front of the intake manifold from the intercooler, see whats in that and start it up without the hose to see what it does.

if you've got or have access to a suitable nanocom or similar that will give more clues.

TD5 injectors are pretty reliable units on the whole most failures being the top seal letting diesel past into the cam area of the head diluting the engine oil.

TD5s also have a fantastic filtration set up so its not unusual for the oil to be cleaner than you expect for a diesel.

    Thanks Blknight.

Will drain the sump and see what comes out. Definitely diesel in there.

Will replace the injector seals and check for any cracks in the head.

Nice present from the previous owner

if you need a hand I know a guy who can be easily conned into coming out and leaning on the spanners if you need it.

One thing with the TD5's - and an increasing oil level is the indicator- is if it was ever seriously overheated previously, the cyl head can become porous, and it tends to overheat suddenly, plus they have ( not sure if it was ever improved) plastic dowels to locate the cyl head in place and the head can 'dance' around under load- others can chip in if they think the rattle is the cyl head dancing I'm not sure.
A good move would be to fit steel dowels, & loctite the oil pump bolt if you don't know the engines history.
That said, its a brilliant engine IMHO.

    Injector Failure

Had the clacking noise on my 2000 TD5. Noise was intermittant and the engine was also down on power. Turned out that the number 3 cylinder injector spring had collasped. Did not produce any more smoke than usual though.

So finally got some time to attend to the 130. Drained the sump. 16 litres!!! more diesel than oil. Level was so high that we probably misread the dipstick anyway. Replaced the injector seals and washers and gave the intercooler a clean out as well. Was hoping to find a dodgy seal or a missing washer but they all looked pristine. Injector sockets had no visible damage. New oil and will watch the level before each trip to see if it's rising. Another thing, the MAF sensor wasn't even connected, but just hanging. Engine has been de-EGRd so not sure if the sensor being disconnected was on purpose? Anyway, have reconnected it and it runs fine. Might have to get my hands on a nanocom to take a look at any fault codes.

Oil level way up after only 50km. Will be getting it booked in for someone to look at, but I feel it may be a new head ... Anyone have any suggestions for td5 mechanics in Melbourne or Gippsland who will do a good job and keep the hip pocket reasonably happy?

how quick do you want it looked at, have you looked for the leak?

Not urgent at all as it's our 3rd vehicle for the time being. I'm not the most mechanically minded person so not sure how to check for where the leak is coming from. Cheers
