    300Tdi Essential Mods?

    Afternoon All,

I own a '97 130 300Tdi, she is an ex-RFS unit and has just ticked over 100k. I took a very long time (about 5 years) to find this 130 and I have every intention to keep this one forever.

I would like to put it to the wealth of knowledge out there, what modifications do you think are essential on a 130 300Tdi - I am looking for bullet proof long term reliability. I'm not after huge lifts, or interested in bolting on every bell and whistle available. I want to keep here fairly true to original, just with all know faults rectified. Is it even possible to stop her leaking?

    So far I have completed the following;

    New coolant hoses
New header tank - Alisport unit
New power steering tank - Alisport unit
New engine breather - Alisport unit
New silicone boost hoses - Alisport
I had the fuel pump stripped and professionally rebuilt
Replaced the wheels with APT modified Genuine Wolf HD rims (I had the centres cut and flipped to help improve offset) with Km2 muddies
    New Clutch slave cylinder
    New Clutch Master cylinder
    New fluids and filters throughout

I am looking into Alisport double core intercooler, and VNT. I also need to replace all the seals on the car as they are either cracked, badly damaged, or missing all together.

Other than all the above, what do you guys recommend. Long term we are looking to drive overland to the UK, and possibly RTW with our 2 young kids - so looking for super robust reliability, not bling!

Thanks, and I look forward to your thoughts.

Well done - Looks like a nice straight, well kept, low mileage 130 that you've acquired.
Just be careful how you load that tray, it seems to have an extraordinary overhang.

    Hi jay_guess

Seems you have found a solid unit and already made plenty of good improvements.

Some things you may consider are a low coolant alarm, the type where the sensor screws into the top of the radiator in place of the brass plug and you have a red led and audible alarm mounted in the dash somewhere.

Replace the standard water temp gauge/sender with a VDO unit for an accurate picture.

Also (maybe) EGT & boost gauges to keep an eye on turbo health. Might be a challenge if wishing to maintain the original look.

Am sure there will be plenty of other suggestions.

    Good luck with your project.

    Cheers Simon

The tray is only 1800 long - I'm pretty sure 130's can take a 2300 tray legally.

I think the 2300 tray would only be for the single cab.
With your 1800 tray (which is a long tray for a dual cab), more than 3/4 of it seems to be behind the rear axle, hence my concern re your load distribution.

    1800x1800 is perfect on a 130
I think the angle of the photo is giving the look of too much overhang

I agree 2300 would be pretty big overhang....

I’ve run up to and over GVM with an 1800 tray on my old 300tdi and newer puma - I busted up the old girl chassis mounts so when building the tray for the Puma took all that learning into account.

My suggestions is to check the try mounts / chassis mounts especially at the front of tray - if it’s ex RFS it has probably been ridden hard and put away wet

Also as a 97 I’d be dropping the sump (it will be leaking and need reselling anyways) and changing out the big end shells - 98 more prone to brinelling but for an overlander id check???

boost gauge, egt gauge, stage one mod on the boost lines for the existing turbo, retune and see how you like it.

then look at better exahust and turbo change.

I'm personally not totally sold on the VNT path for the tdi300, a td04 is a nice easy change in if you want something a little better than the normal turbo as are a few other closer to off the shelf install.

Why are you not sold on the VNT - aren't all modern engines running these?

I am also considering these to replace the standard gauges. Top end motorsport quality, and still in keeping with the original Defender style. But which 3?
