Thread: 300tdi 110 Rear Seat Belt replacement doesn't fit!

G'day folks,

Anyone ever replaced a side, rear seat belt in a 300tdi 110? Mine is 1995 built, if that's relevant...

After destroying the original left hand Rear Seat Belt Assembly in an exercise in stupidity when painting the interior years ago, I finally ordered a replacement through British Auto Parts (part number BTR5779 - Seat Belt Outer) only to find that it doesn't fit in the channel! The supplied unit is simply too wide.

British Auto Parts has been very helpful and went back to the UK supplier with the vehicle VIN and year etc, but are ultimately stumped as to why it doesn't fit....

Looking at the rear Right Hand Seat Belt assembly, the original unit is marked with 48073-A.


Supplied replacement Seat Belt, BTR5779: (loosely fitted for display purpose, too wide for channel)



Original on the other side: (snug fit, but correct. Not a lot of room for error given the protruding bolt)


Anyone encountered a similar problem retro-fitting rear seat belts in a 300tdi 110? Are we simply using the wrong part number?

Ok well never got any bites on this, but for those who come across similar problems one day:

Solution: Stalked ebay and found a genuine BTR5779 seat belt, unused from the UK. Fitted like a charm. Lesson? Not all aftermarket products will fit, despite sharing the same part number. Nothing new there.

IF you have completely reeled the seat-belt into the mechanism (known as 'Reverse Lock'), a problem that inspired the destruction of my original unit, after looking at too many videos to count, the best solution I discovered was as follows:

Sit down, put the seat belt mechanism unit in your lap facing up, grip firmly, and tug the set belt up and down rapidly, even if you only have 0.5mm of movement either way at first, keep doing this and you will find that it completely unravels.
(Yes, lets be honest, this technique will be familiar to most men).

Laugh you may, but it worked, unlike the advice from all those youtube 'experts'. I hope this helps someone out one day.
