    Long time - no post

Hi. Long time since my last post! Maybe 2 1/2 years or so. Been away from LRs, distracted by things like my MAN truck camper and we (foolishly) bought a yacht!

Am selling some of the old stuff I collected when I was building my 130 tourer. Mrs Spud says it is clogging up our garage and has to go. Look in the markets section for details on some TruTrac diffs, and I'll post up some more for my TD5 bullbar and a towbar and a few other odds and sods. Got some 2003 Rangie 19" rims too.

Have spent the last week poking around the YouTube posts for the new Defender. Looks pretty good, if it turns out to be reliable. I'm not rushing in like I did with the PUMA. Going to let them bed it down for a year or two before I put in my order. I think they said it has 83 or 85 ECUs in it so I'm not expecting that to go well once they see a bit of dust/water/age. Anyway, if they turn out to be half decent I think I'll get back to being a Defender owner again. Driving around in a dull but reliable Ford Ranger doesn't really cut it once you've had a Defender.

    Cheers
    David

Well, I totally don't like the rear end of a D5. And the D4s seem overcomplicated, seeing as I came from an older Defender and a D1.

So I'm hoping very much that LR have got the new Defender right, but I guess in reality they are going to be on a par with a D4 for "complicated-ness".

Am happy to wait for a year or two to see how the reports of the New Defender (regarding reliability) pan out. I'm sure it'll be as capable as anything - it's just the reliability question.

    Welcome back! 👍

I think a lot of people are going to wait and see what the new Defender comes up like. I like it’s looks overall, but I’m the same as you in as I wouldn’t jump on the first model, but wait. I still don’t think I’ll be able to afford one though no matter how long I wait... 😁

Yeah - the predicted entry price of $70K for a 110 is quite a jump up from my PUMA which was $49K from memory (it was one of the initial 2.4L models).

Didn't have a bad run with it at all, so that gives me some hope, although there are enough stories around like "Digger's" PUMA dramas to make me think twice.

Why not get a 4bd1t defender? Can add some sound proofing etc and make it comfy. Better than the computer on wheels.

I've had one of them. Loved all the vibrating-ness of the beast. 4 speed could have been better with an overdrive (or 5th!). Mrs Spud wasn't quite as keen on that one, and preferred the 90 or the 110.

My most recent purchase is a VW Kombi 4x4 with a rear diff-lock and rough road suspension,so we're going to use that as our camping mobile for a while.

I’d be interested to hear how the VW goes.

Well, in about 1 hour I am off for a test run! Just going an hour or so from home to see what needs adjusting before a trip to Yorke Peninsula in a few weeks.

It's got 4WD (or 4Motion really) and a rear diff lock, and 'rough road suspension' (whatever that means) so it should be good on modest off road tracks. But I'm not expecting it to come anywhere near a 110. The bed is super comfortable though with a memory foam mattress, which beats the crap out of sleeping on a yoga mat on the ground in a sleeping bag

Picked a cold night to test things out. Got down to almost zero, with quite a bit of frost in the nearby paddocks. Had the Webasto heater running all night, just set to 10 degrees to keep the chill away.

Cooked up a boys dinner on the Snow Peak fire pit (Mrs Spud would not allow me to cook that up if she was there).

It's quick to set up, and has a very comfortable bed, but I think it's going to be a fine-weather-only proposition, much like camping with a roof-top-tent.
