    Dobinson coils and Koni Raids

    Hi
Just about to purchase Dobinson coils and Koni Raids for my 96 TDI 130 dual cab.
On the Dobinson site it only has lifted coils for the rear, not standard height. Just standard height 110 coils. What are people using on there touring set ups. Is lifted coils just to high for a 130 tourer.
Will eventually have my 3 dogs slide on camper on the back. So decent weight.

If you go lifted coils do you need Castor correction?
    Constant rate or 500kg coils?
With 45mm lifted coils is it best to go the Koni 0-40mm or the 40 to 50mm.
    Other coil suggestions

    Thanks gurus

    Dobinson coils and Koni Raids

I personally prefer LR springs. Off the shelf aftermarket are heavier but seem to have a harsher ride and less articulation. If you need extra load carrying and the helper spring isn’t working I would go with rear inner helper air springs.

I fitted Dobinson springs with 2” lift to the 110. I took them out after a couple weeks and fitted used 130 springs. The ride was harsh but had weird impact on steering and resulted in prop shaft uni vibration. I fitted castor correction bushes and had front unis replaced by Hardy Spicer. No joy so went with LR 130 springs and have been very happy. The 110 ride is better than our D1 which has Kings with 2” lift, which results in less body roll but harsh ride.

Raids are good for the Defender having observed 2 other vehicle fitted with them (110/130) on a central Australia trip. They dispel the heat very well on corrugated roads.

I had Dobinson shocks for the above trip. They went ok and did the job but were worn after that trip, and being about 5 years old. The shock rubbers were very worn. Dobinsons replaced them at a much reduced price which I thought was fair. I just changed the front shocks out again after 7 years. One was definitely dead but the other was still functioning just. So they make a pretty reasonable shock for the price if you didn’t want to outlay that much for Koni’s.

I have exactly that set up in my 1998 130 300TDi - Dobinsons 500kg 45mm lift springs, Koni Raid shocks (the longer ones) and poly air bags in the rear coils.

My 130 weighs in at close to 3tons in normal daily drive mode and then add camping gear to that when travelling.

Along with the 285/75R16 Mickey Thompson MTZ's, I find the ride very comfortable - loaded with camping gear or in daily drive mode (I only run 5psi in the poly air bags in daily drive mode).

Make sure all your front end bushes (panhard rod and radius arm. I don't run sway bars) are fresh. This makes a huge difference to the ride and handling
