BAS remap Puma - Reviews / Updates?

Several have done Head Gaakets in stock tune though...

    Hard to quantify unfortunately.

Even in stock tune driven hard I could get to 900 deg EGT.
Without proper gauges you would never know.

    The simple formulas work:

    Help it breathe in
    Cool what it inhales
Help it scavenge what it breathes out BAS remap Puma - Reviews / Updates?

Exactly you can’t quantify it. We know lowering heat and pressure will reduce the probability of failure, all other things being equal. Suitable mods, intercooler and exhaust, laying off the accelerator on long hills will help engine life, but are no guarantee in themselves.
An egt guage is essential as you really need to know when to back off as temps rise.
For me i thought the 170 spiked the temps too readily, and I don’t want to watch a guAge too much, others may be fine with this

I have the 150 tune, I didnt go for the 170 as I thought it was asking just a bit too much form the 2.2 Puma.
I find the EGT's can climb a bit in 6th gear if you dont change down on a long incline, pulling the camper last
weekend at 110kph + from Tweed to Evans Head, I did hit 500 deg a few times, I slowed down to
100kph and it dropped immediately to around 400-420 deg. Admittedly I have insulated and carpeted the cabin,
so I get a bit lax when I can't hear it working. I haven't put in a bigger intercooler yet, that's the next big ticket
item on the menu and then a roof console to mount the UHF as I have bought a sub woofer to mount on the
back of the cubby box, which is where the UHF is now. My indi LR guru calls mine the "Silent Puma" and reckons
it goes like stink compared to a stock Defner. Go for it, you won't regret it.

    All excellent feedback. Thanks guys.

Would this be a fair summary?

It appears that on balance the 150 tune with up-rated intercooler, combined with backing off/dropping back to 5th or 4th on long hills is the way to go. Preferably also install a straight through exhaust deleting 1st muffler, a snorkel for cooler cleaner air intake and an EGT gauge to be on the safe side.

In lieu of going to the expense of installing an EGT gauge, whilst not as accurate, would keeping an eye on the engine temp with an Ultragauge with an alarm set also be a way to monitor safe engine temps?

Gotta say I would put the egt guage up the list. The summary seems to be even with all the cooling aids and 150 mild tunes it’s possible to overheat. Stock tunes can hit 900 and are blowing head gaskets presumably with the heat been the major contributor.
They are too expensive but I think it would have saved my thousands if I had done it earlier.
Tend to disagree about holding revs too, didn’t make that much difference to my temps. Helped but not enough to keep egts within bounds
Coolant gauges are too slow to react, by the the time your egts are over, my coolant was just starting to climb. I was using the bas guage connectedto my phone.

Installed 170AB tune and the larger Alisport intercooler back in Malaysia in July 2015. 38000 km.

Moved back to Oz (brought my DCPU with me as personal import) about 3yrs ago, in October 2016. 62000km

A bit over a year ago (Aug 2018) the Alisport intercooler ruptured. Replaced by Bruce Davis. 76000km

Vehicle has 92000 km on it now.

So all up a low 54000 km with the 170AB tune:
    - 24000 of those km in Malaysia. Lots of mountainous offroad jungle work. Always drove it like I stole it on the road (as I did with stock tune the prior 38000km). Did a number long runs up the hwy from KL to Singapore to KL. Often holding flat out at speed limiter (160km/h) for 45min or so at a time.

    - 30000 of those km in Oz. Only seen a couple of Sydney summers and not a lot of long touring. Just local runs from Sydney into the Blue Mtns, Stockton Beach, Canberra and the Snowy Mtns.

So far, apart from the burst intercooler last year, no issues. Absolute pleasure to drive still. The only change to the "drive it like I stole it" mindset has been to accommodate Australia's better enforcement of road rules and costly penalties for infringements: Around town I now usually drive it full throttle through the gears to the speed limit - usually starting in second gear and upshifting about 2000-2500rpm, short-shifting so as to torque along the tarmac, not rushing gear changes near the redline.

When will I grow up? Turned 60 a month or so ago.

If you upshift at 2000 - 2500rpm, when do you ever get to redline?

Rarely redline in the daily commute. Avoid it by up-shifting early. Only occasionally I rev over 3000rpm to clear the pipes so to speak.

What I described in the post above is my Australian-ised version of “drive it like you stole it”. To avoid expensive infringement notices (talking about the daily city commute here, my DCPU is my daily driver) :
    - still use full throttle through gears up to whatever is the speed limit (I get, 40/50/60/70/80/90 km/h zones on work, shopping and school runs daily)

    - I up-shift around 2000-2500 rpm to avoid too rapid a rate of progress, torquing along, as opposed to revving up through full rev range.

    Notes:
My vehicle has NOT been burdened with the accumulated weight of bar work, winches, long range fuel tanks, water tanks, racks, rooftop tents, cupboards, drawers, kitchen sinks, awnings, en-suites or pop top. A tune/intercooler, 33” rubber and some Ashcroft driveline replacement bits are my only mods. (Chassis and body “mods” like rock scrapes and pinstriping are courtesy of Mother Nature.)

I do change my driving style when carrying a load, on the open road travelling longer distances, and off-road.
