    '01 Defender 130

    Hi everyone,

New to the site as I'm looking at moving from a Land Cruiser to a Defender 130 or 110, hopefully for a good change.

I currently am looking at a '01 Defender 130 (previously metro area CFA fleet) with complete log book, clean except where radios installed and non functioning horn, and 78,000 km's. No extra accessories aside from bull bar and side bars.

What price range should i expect to pay for something like this? I see low recommendations but usually higher prices on all Defenders and need something to gauge a good condition ute.

Definitely not an expert on prices but from my own experience (2000 130 ex fire only with 63000ks), sounds like a great deal especially with low k's but you need remember it's 20 years old and unless they've gone through and replaced everything rubber, you'll probably need to do it very soon. Things like radiator/theromstat will be getting brittle and should be replaced, turbo hoses, clutch/DMF?, all the viton seals (esp in transfer case and oil cooler), head gasket? It's a td5 so heaps of stuff to do as preventative maintenance. If it's got a full service history, that's only half the story, changing fluids is obviously a good thing but replacing hoses and other more expensive items could be a bargaining point on your end. I wish I haggled more for mine on these points. I'd be looking at low 20's if those big items haven't been done. They try and sell the low k's but if it's original there's heaps of money to be spent to remain reliable.

there is a stepped coolant hose under the turbo that gets forgot when replacing hoses. It's a RPITA to replace roadside and invariably goes when you least want it to. i agree that it's at that age when you will seem to be shelling out $$ systematically replacing aged parts. I had a '99 and it was constantly in the workshop as little things went. Gave my wife the ****s so much she told me to sell it and buy a younger Defer. Naturally i obliged.

We bought our 2000 ex-rfs 130 with <70,000kms at the start of the year for about $28k. The dealer wasn't very interested in haggling and all the next-best options were either $15+k more expensive or with 100,000++ more km. There are a few extra holes in the car from old wiring etc but I bought a landie for functionality, not looks.

I paid for a major service at a local Land Rover specialist (including about 20l of oil!) for peace-of-mind and the only major problem found was a leaking water pump. It runs really well, comfortable cruises at 100-110 and uses just over 10L/100km of diesel.

I have replaced all the door seals but have not (yet) worried about rubber hoses under the bonnet - they look fine but I may renew them all before our round-Australia trip in 2021. (If nothing else, I will end up with a full set of spare hoses.) I pro-actively replaced the fuel pump recently when I removed the tray so I have a spare one of those now as well. (Seemed like a good insurance policy since the pump is so difficult to get at.)

    Just out of interest,

I bought a single cab 130 1997 a couple of years ago, about 29000 km on it, the usual rubber parts needed replacing.

But has anyone here bought a single cab ex fire unit? If so I'd love to see some pics!

    Of any really..

    Cheers
    James

Replacing fluids and hoses myself it not much worry but out of curiosity, how was much the service at Land Rover? I'm just trying to get an idea of dealer rates for Rovers.
Also, I read that some people are replacing head gaskets at around 80k for preventative maintenance for cooling issues. Are people actually dong this? You shouldn't have to replace the head unless its cooked, and ensuring fresh coolant and watching temps should do the trick to avoid this in my mind. Or alternatively aftermarket cooling?

It was about $2k all up - full major service, all oils + brake & clutch fluid, water pump and a couple of other bits and pieces. Not very cheap but I get their experience, advice and opinion as part of the deal. I'll now do most stuff such as 10,000km services, replacing hoses, potential EGR removal, etc myself. (Time permitting - 20 years ago I had no money but time to rebuild my 110's gear-box, I now have less time due to family commitment but a bit more cash!)

For those who are interested, we purchased our '97 300tdi 130 - EX RFS with well under 100k on the clock for $15k. We are now slowing prepping for RTW travel. For me it had to be the 300tdi, I have owned TD5's in the uk and the power was great no doubt about that, but for us the lack of electronics in the 300Tdi made for a better choice as a world tourer. I also strangely prefer the tractor like engine of the tdi.

Bought my 96 Tdi 130, 2 months ago after a 2year + search. 200k on the clock. Good service history. On a farm in the Claire Valley South Australia. Flew from Sydney , checked it out then drove it back home to the Hunter Valley over two days. With the biggest smile on my face. Without a hitch. Only regret, I never passed another Defender in that time, and had to wait another 2 weeks to join the Defender wave club. Wouldn't swap it for anything. Plan finish the slide on camper I'm rebuilding, get a tray. Get the truck sorted and hit the road. Next year Mungo NP, Gawler rangers NP, Googs track, Gammon ranges, Inamincka, Coongie lakes, Cameron's , and home.
