    Oil blow back - Defender 2.2 MY2015

My 2015 Defender puma engine seized up a couple of weeks ago. I had it towed to British Offroad on the Sunshine Coast and apparently there has been some oil blow back and I therefore need a new engine. I don't know why it has happened.

I am wondering if other people have experienced this and what was their preferred option out of this predicament. My Defender has a full service history through Land Rover during warranty period and then all servicing done at British Offroad, who I believe to be very good. It has done 110k, so not really that many kilometers on the clock.

The options I have been offered so far are a secondhand engine or a new/refurbished block, both are very expensive options.

I would be grateful for any advise or suggestions as this is new territory for me and the numbers are scary.

Wow,only 110 thou K's for a modern diesel engine. If there is a history of Puma engines seizing you may be able to reach an agreement with L.R so the cost of a new engine is borne by both parties.
Fair trading may be interested in your case, they've been quite active against several car manufacturers lately. Wasn't there a case a short while ago where a couple were refunded the money for a L.R Discovery or R.R as it was deemed not fit for purpose?
Recently our Craptiva had a cracked baseplate of the transmission. Long story short, I explained that as it was a manufacturing issue I didn't think it fair I pay for the entire repair. They assessed and agreed to replace the transmission(two years beyond warranty period).
I didn't think I had a snowball's chance however a mate suggested that Holden is smarting over treatment they had received from Fair Trading.
Could be L.R are also reluctant to receive more attention from F.T as well?

    NZrlh,

I feel for you - not sure if you can give more info but...

You say engine was seized. How did that happen driving along and then stalled? Wouldn’t start?
Mechanic say blow by which can be the result of a few things?
Out of interest do you have a tune on the engine?

The tdci is not a terrible engine by LR standards but failures are not uncommon unfortunately
As mentioned if you have a solid service history with LRover they may help but unfortunately it is still most likely needing a new/used engine. 110,000 is pretty low km for complete failure- any symptoms / overheating / leaks that preceded death?

Oil blow back is not technically a fault, as it is a symptom of a bigger issue. Did the engine seize due to lack of cooling either by the cooling system, or the oil lubrication system.
Do you have a specific fault that has caused the engine to seize? Technically you may just be able to get away with a short block and have all the good bits transferred over if the seizure is only oil lubrication based, as crank and big ends fail before cam shaft rocker gear.
Complete engines from the UK less the fuel system, and electrical are a not bad option but still not cheap. But cheaper than getting an OEM LR parts department item. When I holed a piston in my 2.2 I was quoted $32K for a new engine….. buy you can but new short engines from the UK LR055432 2.2 Ford Tdci stripped engine
If the engine can be rebuilt that may also be an option Land Rover Defender 2.2 TD4 DT224 Engine Rebuild Kit with 0.50mm oversize Long Pistons=

    What is the diagnosis?
Only just out of Warranty I would hit Land Rover up.
But you would need to determine the failure first to make sure it is a manufacturer defect.
If not get onto Ebay and look up 2.2 puma or transit engines.
You can get a long engine for $6500.
I bought a rebuild kit from the UK for $1400 landed.
