    Front Diff Destruction..

So a while ago my Deefer started making a weird whining noise almost like a jake brake when decelerating and sounded to be coming from the front.

After taking it home I checked uni's and oil levels and all seemed good so took it back out and the sound was still there when decelerating. I tried to reverse it out of a parking spot and it was as if it was locking up.

I knew it had to be something to do with the front diff so I dropped the oil and after some fishing found the following...

The teeth I understand but the bolt head has me stumped. I'm guessing it's from the crown gear but I don't understand how it's snaped off?

Will obviously be pulling the front diff out to clean the whole lot out and replace anything damaged but was after peoples thoughts and ideas before I pull it apart.

I've seen some upgraded parts for sale, something about the crown and pinion not ground right and pushing apart not pulling in when engaging? Is there any recommendations on whats best to put in?

    Edit: I forgot to mention that it is a 2000 TD5 130.

Looks like a CW has loosened off, snapped on something and done the rest of the damage.

I'd just replace it all or any parts if there haven't been any problems with the standard setup - otherwise its a great excuse and timing for upgrades if you decide you need/want a locker or whatever.

I really don't think the CW/P is a problem unless you've broken one before, the shrapnel parts there just look like colateral damage to a loosed and then snapped CW bolt to me.

Maybe just loctite would be the upgrade you need.

That front diff will be cactus. If you've snapped one bolt I'd be replacing all 10 of them as well as the crown wheel and pinion, and bearings. Best option in my opinion replace the complete diff, at least they are cheap and plentiful.

    Thanks for the reply guys.

I finally got around to pulling the diff out and it seems two crown gear bolts managed to work themselves out they've then been slowly chewed up by the diff housing and also chewed a few teeth off. Not only that the pinion bearing has also been damaged at some point (I'm guessing it took some shrapnel)

    Here's the aftermath...

So now it's time to mull over a few drinks and work out my options... to ATB or not to ATB that is the question

I was thinking of rebuilding but with the housing damage I just don't think it's worth the effort and time...

The housing will be fine, I think Ive got a spare crown wheel / pinion and carrier in perfect condition if you want to get out of it cheap. But personally I'd be putting an ATB in there.

ATB is additional to any repair you would be making.

The fastest and cheapest fix would be to replace the entire lot with a low km used 3rd member diff assembly, just bolt the whole lot in and off you go. $250-300 and obviously you can put it in.

To rebuild, you're not happy with the housing, the CW/P and bolts are gone, carrier and pinion bearings are gone, not sure about the hemisphere, plus labour and parts like seals, shims to set it all up.

Whichever way, then add the price of the ATB if you go that way.... although I would air lock it.
