    R380 I.D.

    Hi,

Is there any way To easily identify an r380?

Other than the serial of course, mine never had one...

Will I need to pull it down?

    What's it behind?

That'll narrow it down a lot

Behind a 300 tdi in a defender, but it came with another vehicle as well, and at LEAST two vehicles have been mixed and matched, engines have been replaced, dubious odometer readings as well, so I'm a bit hamstrung, but it should have been a 97 model, 120 km but everything has been rebuilt, so no idea.

Mainly concerned what revision it is.

Late '97 should be a K, and that's a much stronger 'box then the J, but you'd have to pull it down to tell. [emoji53]

That's what is the bother, it could be a K that's only done 120 ...or it could be J that's done 500.

    Cheers

Is my recollection correct that the major difference between J and K suffix is the 5th gear support bearing?
If so - popping off the 5th extension housing is quick and easy and requires no setup to replace from memory
Would also allow you to check / clean / replace the pump and filter mesh before putting the box into service? - as well as checking that 5th support bearing

I have a message from Dave Ashcroft somewhere detailing the differences, I'll see if I can dig it up

Mine also has no number and have been wondering the same. Do you know how he knew to spot the difference?
