Bonnet mounted spare

I’m looking to put a spare on my 300tdi bonnet. It has the reinforcing but no mount. Second hand bonnets with the mounts seem to be very rare and the genuine kits are quite dear.
Has anyone fabricated their own mounts? If so, would love some photos/info.

Has anyone used one of these kits on a 300tdi? It states you need to use a bonnet protector however my bonnet has reinforcing built into it so surely it’s not needed

I used the base and bolts from a Ser 3 on a 300tdi Deefer bonnet - has worked fine over many corrugations

I see what you mean by genuine kits are quite dear! I bought one 2 years ago (STC7633) and it was $110, but now I see it is $399 from the same seller!

Steel plate underneath, chequerplate on top. Rubber buffers from Bunnings and a home made clamp bent up from steel bar to hold the wheel in place. Total cost about $25. Mod added in 2013. Been all around Australia,done most of the tracks and the Simpson. Still going strong.

Nice mate well done. Is this a 300tdi or td5 bonnet?

I made one years ago for my Stage 1.

I just copied a rear door mount from a Series 3 and bolted it to the bonnet with some appropriate rubber buffers for the tyre to rest on.

Firstly what sort of rims are you using?

The original land Rover bonnet mount for the defender is the best looking but cannot be used with a boost alloy and possibly others. The aftermarket ones seem to for most rims.
Along with the reinforced bonnet you will also need the stronger bonnet stay rod, which if you have a 300 tdi, you should also already have.

Realistically all the mount is, is two bolts through the bonnet that a metal retainer goes over, then is bolted down, the outside edges of the rim then sit on 4 Rubber buffers which are also bolted through the bonnet.

A reasonably skilled shed tinkerer should be able to make all of these.

If I were making one I would probably copy the genuine idea, but design it too fit all size rims.

It's the size of the rim centre that is the problem btw.
