    MT82 output shaft

Output shaft exploded today in NZ. Dealer wants $3000 to fit Ashcroft replacement.
No warranty, mechanical breakdown insurance says it’s nit covered because I do my own oil changes.

    Tough day

    How many KM.
Don't know how changing the oil affects this.
If you get insurance they will only fit genuine part.
Seems a bit steep as parts are sub $1000
and you don't have to remove the gearbox.

135K kms. Land Rover NZ only fit the Ashcroft part, they say they are now standard replacement for the original. They want $1800 for the Ashcroft, which I can online for $600.

Sounds like you need to sack your insurer, or push them harder. The original component is not lubricated after leaving the factory. The Ashcroft one is.

    Hi,

I got this done in 2016 on my 2012 Defender mileage 31003 km as I had heard that this issue will cause an inconvenient breakdown.
I imported the shaft from Ashcroft cost GBP 285, postage GBP 59, NZ Customs etc NZD $174.
Duncan and Ebbett here in Hamilton did the work and charged $1038 for the work - Labour = 5.5 hours + some other parts and oil.

    Kerry,
    Hamilton NZ.

No way should it cost that much, and there is no reason for the dealer to force you to use the Ashcroft replacement, I just bought the kit from Output Shaft Repair Kit MT82 (Britpart) DA2720 Island 4x4 - Specialists in Land Rover and Range Rover Parts and accessories for all models. UK and worldwide mail order. and did the grease nipple modification.
The transfer case does need to be removed, and the hardest part of the job is to remove the piece that goes into the gearbox output shaft, so you can replace the seal.

Advice Ashcroft vs Entreq (Germany) solution for MT82 shaft

    Hello

I wish to complete preventative maintenance on my 2010 Defender 90 2.4, and replace the MT82 shaft, and seeking wider advice between the Ashcroft solution or the Entreq design.

Please refer to links below. If links read in German, please view via Safari and click translate in view.

    Achsen und Antrieb | Entreq
    Zwischenwelle (Satz) TD4 | Entreq

    Ashcroft Transmissions

The two solutions appear to solve from different views - Ashcroft introduce lubrication to protect the shaft whereas Entreq introduce a higher load capacity / corrosion resistant material to mitigate failure.

    Advice appreciated

    Patrick

Not familiar with the Entreq option, but I have the Ashcroft part fitted, as do MANY others with, to the best of my knowledge, no problems. Certainly no issues with mine.

There is another option, a relatively recent one: LOF EXTREMEspec MT82 Output shaft kit for Defender TDCI - Land Rover Clutches

No experience with this last one - prolly worth a bit of research.

Thanks for listing the LOF alternative - appears a thoughtout design

If any one has fitted the unit I would welcome feedback
