    R380- Leaking selector shaft o ring FRC4951

    While doing some jobs on my 2004 Td5 I noticed oil in the top of the gearbox selector and after stripping more away also under the transfer case selector. From looking at manual looks like a leaking selector shaft o ring frc4951, and possibly a blocked breather.

    My question is can I remove the gearbox remote from the top of box without having to remove the gearbox? Can I just remove the transmission tunnel or can it come backwards and out the centre seat box panel.

    Will order up the o ring but don't have the gear to drop a gearbox.

    What also concerns me is its definitely not Syntrans, more like sludgy old diff oil...... had this vehicle almost a year, all fluids dropped and changed with spec shorlty after purchase.

    Removed the gearbox remote, which is possible with transmission tunnel removed. Manual shows it lifting straight up and off but with the seatbox inplace it can only come up an inch so the selector shaft needs to be rotated towards the drivers side so it disengages from the selector quadrant, the qhole remote housing can then slide towards the drivers side then foward and out.

    As for the oil leak, oil from here definitely flowing down both sides of gearbox but o ring looks okay so beginning to think previous owner had deliberately filled these cavities with gear oil.

    New o ring should arrive this week, then reassembly should just be reverse of dissably, fingers crossed.

    I would have expected to have seen grease in there? It looks like what ever that is it has water in it, perhaps water is getting into it. Youll have to check if oil is even fed up there. If not i would just apply some grease in there.

    Refitted the gearbox remote after changing the o ring on the selector extension. Changing the oring was straight foward, refitting the housing was not easy, no matter what I did I couldn't get it refitted with the seatbox in place. By unbolting it and tilting it up this gave me me another inch to fit the selector into the fork.
    There definitely shouldn't be oil up here, some grease yes but I don't think it has all leaked past the oring. I think now that both cavities were deliberately filled with what looked like EP90 which has mixed with grease and maybe some water.

    Glad I don't need to drive the truck to work at the moment as all floor panels and seats are out, tidying some minor rust in the driver's footwell while I'm at. Will report on the gearbox perfomance once driveable.

    Nice one mate, Yea its a bit of a weird setup but then again the jobs where someone else has been messing around with are usually the worst. I was thinking the grease/oil mixture nearly looks the same as the one shot grease for swivel hubs. Anyway at least its nearly back together.

    Update, gearbox selector was reassembled, lowered the gearbox of its mounts and wedged the seatbox up a little at the front to give space for reassembly.
    Added a Slickshift and LOF clutch spring. Now that all the floor and and seatbox with soundproofing are back in the Defender is a much more comfortable ride. Gear selection is short and positive. Happy with the end result.

    Might have to invest in one when I get the dual cab going again

    Hi Gav,

    I bought the Slickshift as a kit a while back it iclududed a new turret and all springs plus a replacement foam it was about £150, can't recall now who I bought from i usually use island 4x4 or Rimmer bros as they are good with freight. Google slickshift kit R380 and see whobhas the best deal.

    Not sure about Santna, what gearboxes do they run?

    The kit is worth as my worn turret was making 1st to 2nd change a bit crunchie. They wear was easy to see once off.
