    Dimensions of Defender Rear Tub

    Hi All

I would be really grateful if someone could reply with the dimensions of a Defender rear tub (90 or 110 - I think they are the same).

    I am particularly after:

    1. The height of the seat box from floor to top of box (Should be around 21cm)
    2. The distance between seat boxes (Should be around 91cm)
    3. The width of the seat box (Should be around 35 cm)
    4. The length of the floor from door to bulkhead (in a 90, not a 110)

I had a thread running several years ago about the trials and tribulations of obtaining a WA modification permit to install rear seats in my SIII SWB. I eventually gave up, but have now decided to try to progress this again. This time the bloke managing the application was significantly more forward leaning/pragmatic/intelligent/helpful/interested and I have managed to get DoT approval in principle for 2 x forwards facing rear seats (original bench seats being something that they won't even countenance...). Subject to also having a certified roll cage installed.

The roll cage is easy enough as I already have this and will just need to get an engineer to sign off on it. The easiest way forward with the seats will be to install these Loc and Fold - Defender Load Area - Seating | Exmoor Trim

They are however designed for a Defender wheel box and I need to work out how much difference there is going to be between this and a Series. You would have thought that it would be an obvious question and that Exmoor Trim would have been able to tell me, but they are really not being terribly helpful.

    Thanks in advance

    Alistair

    Hi Alistair,

Hopefully this gives you what you're after.
I got this off a website somewhere, possibly Mulgo, but can't recall for sure.

Second pic is measured off my Puma.
Not shown in my pic is width between seat boxes - I get 92cm.

    Can't help with 90 load floor length - mines a 110.

    Hi Dan

Thanks very much for your post. I concurrently found this picture elsewhere on line suggesting that the height is 220mm, so 8mm less than in one of your sketches, but exactly the same as the one in your hand-drawn one.

    File0690.jpg

So I am guessing that 220mm is probably the correct figure although really I want to find a Defender in the street somewhere so that I can put a tape measure against it and see it with my own eyes before making an expensive error...

I have re-measured my SIII and found that the distance between seat boxes is in fact 920mm, so exactly the same as the Defender. The height of the seatbox is however definitely 210mm.... so 10mm shorter.

Although this isn't ideal in that the off-the-shelf frame won't bolt straight in, it does at least mean that I can make up a simple 10mm aluminum spacer plate to take up the difference.

I have also asked the manufacturer of the subframe if he can do me a bespoke one which is 10mm shorter than normal. I suspect however that I might not like the cost of this even if technically possible. So in all probability I will end up with the spacer.

Thanks for your help. If anyone out there with a Defender can do a sanity check of the 220mm measurement it would be very much appreciated!

The point I was going to make I think has already been made - dimensions changed slightly with the Puma. Series Landrovers have a different height for the seat boxes.

The 920mm between the seat boxes is actually exactly three feet, and I am pretty sure this remained the same from 1948. Note that measurements need to allow for any matting or carpets.

    Hi Alistair,

Yes as JD says, the height (and the shape) changed slightly from the Td5 to Puma Defenders.

The hand drawn picture is what I measured myself on my Puma prior to making and fitting a storage drawer, so I wanted to get it right and I'm pretty confident 220mm is correct. Though given Defender build tolerances, who knows....
Unfortunately I can't re-check this for you because it is now all covered up!
