Not many people out there running the 1.301 ratio from what i've seen. A lot more running the 1.222 from the discos.

I recently fitted a disco one to see how it goes(ive got a td5 though) and its so much better on the freeway, definitely have to change your driving style now and let the turbo spool and the engine rev rather than the quick shifts with the 1.4 case. Only issue is you notice it a little bit on big hills taking off in first gear it can be a bit high. Im running standard 235 tyre size and id be nervous about going to 33s or bigger now, if i do move to 33s ill probably look at getting my case rebuilt with a 1.3 ratio but its a lot of coin.

    Hi Alex,

Are you running a remapped ecu on your defender or stock? currently looking into the disco setup for someone and I feel that a stock defender would struggle a bit.

    Cheers

TD5 with a 10P engine and an EGR block but no tune. It's really only the big hills you do a little clutch slip to get it going, only two or three near me in sydney that i have to do it on. It actually holds better up hills on the freeway in fourth now than it did before.

Got my fair share of weight with a bullbar, winch, rear bar/wheel carrier, dual battery, fridge, water tank, drawers, roof top tent etc.

I think if you tow anything braked you'd be in a lot of trouble, i dont personally fancy taking off in low and switching to high range on the fly.

Thanks Alex. Mine being a Tdi300 so not as powerful as a TD5 so I'll ponder for a bit longer.

James, my 98 130, 5 speed , 300 tdi is running a discovery transfer case and is slow off the mark but drives ok on the highway. I have towed a camper trailer up to the cape sitting at 90/ 100 kph mainly in 4th. Starting on hills is a nightmare. In most case's it engage low range and then a racing change back to high range once on the move. Some would say its not an issue, but this is my opinion. In the near future i will be going back to the defender transfer case, and i have sourced a Roamer drive , that i will fit. In my opinion this should be the best of both worlds. Baz

    LT230 1.3 Ratio

Thanks Baz. I emailed Ashcroft who replied that they supply a lot of 1.3 ratios for Tdi Defenders so I'm thinking I'll go with the 1.30 ratio.

    Tdi300 1.3 Ratio Transfer box

Will do Baz. Anticipate will get the job done later this year. Also plan to fit an Ashcroft LT230 Torque Biasing Diff at the same time.

Consider fitting a V8 ration fifth gear - on of my sons fitted one to a customer car - it has worked very well. FWIW I fitted a 1.2 TC to my defender when it had a 300Tdi in it - it went well overall, but became a 'hill detector'. I now have an Isuzu 4 BD1T in the vehicle which transformed the vehicle.
