    97 300tdi diesel leak

    Hey peeps,

I've got diesel leaking around my tank. It's dripping from the front mounting nuts and surrounds. I have recently purchased the vehicle and I haven't noticed any leaks for the two weeks I've owned it.
I only noticed it leaking after I had filled it up. I have read that it could be coming from the breather if over filled, but I didn't go past 1 click on the fuel pump when filling. I've also driven it about 70kms since filling it.

Could this just be a simple leak coming from the return pipe that is leaking over the front, or could it be a crack in the tank?

I'm new here and a first time poster.

    Thanks!

On another inspection I can see it is wet around the fuel sender unit. Could a leak from this cause all that mess?

yep, diesels like WA dust. you only need one little spec of it and it will get everywhere.

    tank sender gasket weep.

my old tank used to weep from the gasket around the fuel contents sender. gets worse when the tank was filled right up for a long trip due to the slight head pressure on the top of the tank. New tank now and new handcut gasket from an old bit of repco joint material. joint was about 2.5mm thick before bolt up.

On my 1992 200tdi diesel tank I had a similar problem.
There was a small crack in the round plastic bit where the fuel level sender unit goes into the tank.

I actually patched the crack with some fuel tank sealing 2 pot stuff (can't remember what stuff) but that fixed it permanently.

You have to get the tank a bit over half full and then carefully wipe all the dust and dirt and diesel away from the sender unit and then shine a
strong light on the sender unit and you may see the diesel slowly seap through a crack in the plastic.

    Thanks everyone for your input.

I've ordered a new fuel sender unit from 4wd industries.

Cost me $82 delivered. I'll update post when the item arrives and I take the tank off.

    Cheers.
