    2012 Puma Air Con Issues

    Hi All,

I have problems with my A/C blowing fuses. So far I have ran external wiring to eliminate wiring loom issues and removed the clutch assembly. A fridgy/electrician mate seems to believe the problem lies in the electromagnet. Does this sound correct? And does anyone know where I may source a new one? I have searched fairly extensively but can only find full compressor units or clutch replacement kits for older models.

    Cheers

    John

No, I haven't had that with my 2009. Puzzling. Suggest you get an air-con workshop involved before spending money. I didn't think the air-con system had any unusual features to cause an issue.

    Hi John,
Don't know much about aircon compressors, but if any electromagnet gets held open when energized, it will usually draw a lot of current and it should also get hot.
Whether or not you could tell that this is the case in the engine bay is another matter.

So when I say gets held open, something is stopping it going full travel and hitting a hard bottom. What ever is stopping it getting to full bottom is "soft" and lets the core vibrate. This vibration will be what's drawing the current and popping the fuse.

If you can measure the resistance of the winding for the magnet it should be less than 10 ish ohms but more than 2 ish. If it's like this and still blowing fuses then moving side of the clutch is "seized" on the slide or you've got dross in between the plates. Don't know how serviceable the clutch is. I see this in larger hydraulic valves a bit, where the spool gets stuck for some reason.

I'll do some further investigation. We did measure the resistance, but I have forgotten the readings. My mate seemed to think they were fine.
Hard to tell if its heating up on it's own accord, everything is hot in there
I would like to replace the magnet and clutch if I can find the kit, I may try servicing this clutch and check again that its not being fouled when it engages.

Thanks very much for the reply.

    Hi John

I’m out the back of the Sunny coast but get down Caloundra way most weeks.

Last year my 2.4tdci AC pump seized
The clutch is still ok though.

Assuming the pumps are the same between 2.4 and 2.2 I’m sure we can trade clutch/pulleys for beers!

    G'day Steve,

Thanks mate. Would be worth a try I reckon. More than happy to come to you to pick up. I'm in Buderim.
From what I can tell they look the same. Let me know when is best for you.

    Cheers

    Overdue Update

I got this issue sorted a while ago and forgot to update for other owners interest.

After acquiring a second hand compressor I swapped the electromagnet to my car.
This has fixed the problem and it no longer blows the fuse.

    Cheers all.
