Update.
I finally got the Defender back on the road, and confirmed that the adapter shaft was the culprit.
The Landrover shaft is really a poor piece of engineering, in my case the shaft was very warn (thru lack of lubrication) and the circlip that held the shaft in place popped out, so shaft was only half engaged. If you have a Puma and it hasnt happened to you yet, IT WILL.
My mechanic reckons the LOF fix is real good, he tried to order some but out of stock.
Whilst out, the clutch was replaced. The LR clutch spring were loose as buggery.
Anyway, drive wise. Theres a big difference.
Backlash is just about eliminated.
Labour cost was around $2100 to replace Clutch, shaft etc..
I supplied the parts.
