MT82 Stuck in 3rd and now won't go into third

    G'day,

Have a 2011 Puma 110 that is having a problem with the gearbox.

I've had a look around online and it seems like gear sticking can be a problem with the MT82 but usually in 1st, 2nd or reverse.

Last couple of weeks I've noticed sometimes the gear lever sort of stuck in third and took a decent yank to disengage, but thought maybe I was just pushing laterally too much...

Today driving home, it stuck and wouldn't come out as I approached a roundabout. Managed to hoink it out but now the selector won't go into 3rd...

Has anyone had this issue with 3rd? Note that it isn't grinding, no bangs or anything to suggest I've blown the gear its just got stuck in and now it won't go back into 3rd.

Hoping it is a simple fix as had the box rebuilt already about 25k km ago?

    Thanks,
    Gus

i blew my 3rd gear in the MT82. i did it loaded to 3.5T twin locked on a sand dune at full noise. first symptom was a tick tick tick noise most noticeable at slow speeds the noise was louder than the rest of the car. Eventually i lost 3rd. When the box came apart the syncro separated from the 3rd gear. The syncro is spot welded on to the gear in 3 spots. Mine the welds broke. i replaced 3rd with an aftermarket gear that is welded full diam.

I didn't have jamming in gear. I could feel the syncro not quite lined up and gear changes was tight.

Long and short, i suspect your 3rd syncro is the problem.

If your research of jamming in gear comes from the Mustang mob, different problem. They complain about jamming while flat shifting at 7,000 rpm. the mustang box has nothing in common with the LR box bar the name.

Sorry for your unwanted expense to open it up again

*Try pumping the clutch pedal furiously and see if it goes in better, if so I'd say its the slave on the clutch.
    *Clutches on Defender TDCi (puma) 2007 - 2016 typically fail at 70K - 120K.
*There are also 2 alignment collars that later TDCi had fitted to better align the shift assembly (fitted diagonal to each other) , but its hit and miss if these were fitted on the production line.

    Thanks both for your responses

So I actually managed to get it back into 3rd by jiggling it around a lot and then slowly releasing the clutch with the shifter pushed against the 3rd gate and it popped in.

Since then it has been hit and miss:

    1. Changed the oil and had a brief day or so of bliss thinking that had remedied it. Oil was clean. Box was only rebuilt 20 months ago/20k km ago. New clutch and slaves were fitted at the same time.
    2. It happens on all gears now, but 3rd is definitely most common
    3. It seems to happen more when going up a hill (noticed this as every time it happens and im trying to find a gear im rapidly slowing down - had to throw the hazards on yest before finally managing to slot 2nd)
    4. Usually what will happen is as I pull it out of 3rd to downshift its grabby, it pops out and then I can't shift it into 2nd or other gears from neutral as though I'm pushing the shifter linkage against a wall if that makes sense. I've found that if I just move the shifter left right and into any other gear wherever I can it seems to "re-align" itself and the box starts working again normally.
    5. It isn't grinding at all or making any other untoward noises

So all that has me leaning towards a shifter linkage issue perhaps? Which might be fixable I'm hoping via the top without dropping the box?
Perhaps even those alignment collars because it feels like the shifter just loses alignment and then re-aligns?

Thinking maybe this could be a remedy as per your mention of that part above Dazza? DEFENDER2.NET - View topic - LTB00585 Difficulty Selecting Gears/Poor Gear Shift Quality

Hoping either of you might have more experience on the matter!!

Really want to sort it as cheaply as possible because want to head on a week long trip in a few weeks.

Yes what you linked to is what I am talking about, you can access it without too much drama from the top. When I am removing a gearbox I don't remove the black plastic tunnel, with the right tool you can get to the bolts, but each to their own.

The 2 collars go in the front right bolt hole and the bottom left.

But... honestly I doubt it will fix it, the characteristics of what you are describing is telling me its the slave cylinder, have a look under the box where the bellhousing is and look for any signs of fluid. Obviously check your clutch fluid level.

Yeah that actually makes a bit of sense in that I feel like I've noticed the clutch slipping a little more than usual of late - perhaps clutch fluid - will be checking this eve!

Strange the fluids full and no signs of leaking at all. Any other ideas?

Just to round this out for those in future with similar symptoms.

Ended up being the clutch master cylinder - so basically as Dazza suggested with the slave just other end of the system and thankfully much easier to replace!

The seals in it had degraded enough that evidently just wasn't pushing full pressure.

Good to see a reply with the fix.
Often when the master goes the fluid is a nasty black colour.
