Yes the 2.2 does have the thermal protection, and will cut throttle response if it gets too hot. I think though that stopping the engine before is better. The trouble with these systems that the temp reading is only being read from a single position, and other parts of the engine could already be dry and getting much hotter than the area with the sensor.
Many engine protection systems use a pressure sensor instead so that a leak can be recognised way before coolant levels drop too much....
