    Exciting driveline sounds and smells

    Hi there,

Driving from Sydney up to the coast yesterday I noticed a whining coming from the driveline in my 2010 110 which only got worse with time and produced a burning that had a sweet ATF like smell to it.

It’s only present when under load, I.e when the engine is driving the wheels and on roll off it accompanies some pretty loud squeaks and clunks. The transfer appears completely functional as does the gearbox. The noises appear to be coming from closer to the firewall at the trans tunnel rather than the transfer case.

I’m suspecting a bearing in the gearbox at this point which will be more evident when I can drain fluids. Both universal joints seem intact and ok - the vehicle is lifted and doesn’t have a DC front shaft so I do have suspicions there.

Curious what the groups thoughts are and next steps that you’d consider.

front driveshafts make some very unusual noises before they appear to be u/s.

for the sake of 15-20 minutes undoing 8 bolts with 13mm spanners I'd be dropping it out for a look.

if you don't have the wear with all to strip and inspect the uni's/splines and then lube everything with high quality grease , take it to a drive line specialist.

I'd be thinking the TC... Is it in ALL gears or mainly the final drive gears?

I had something very similar happen to me on my last year major trip crossing the desert off-track. Mine started 1st day out and had me concerned to the point that I would not drive in 6th gear as that was where the noise/whine seemingly originated from. The noise wasn't there in any other gear at that point. For most I the trip I just kept driving in 5th gear. After a few phone calls to various LR Mechanics, I dropped the GB oil to checked the state of the GB oil which was still like brand new. I refilled the GB with Nulon full synthetic 75w90 oil along with Nulon's G70 oil additive. By the time I had completed the Googs Track and hit the Hwy & headed up to Coober Pedy the noise appeared to be gone or greatly diminished. Unfortunately, the drive from Coober Pedy to Kulgera the noise returned. Again, by the time I had reached Birdsville and again headed north the noise again seemed to have gone/diminished. When it was time to head homewards along the Hwy again I noticed the noise had returned but this time I could also start to hear it in 5th slightly. I made it all the way home w/o any issues and still haven't gotten around to investigate the issue but the noise is nowhere as bad as it was but now I can hear it in 4th >6th gears.

I'm now thinking it's the TC and have purchased a rebuild kit along with a ATB for the centre Diff. It's just a waiting game until a mate & I can find the time to rebuild the TC....

If you get to find out for sure what your issue is, I'll be greatly interested to know...

    cheers

    Gday Rob,

Turns out it was the TC, completely drained of oil and missed it last service and stupid me didn’t check. Looks like one of the bearings had failed on the intermediate shaft as well as a completely disintegrated thrust washer in the diff. All in good fun, in the process of rebuilding it now.
