    Defender 90 dual battery

    Hi,

I want to install a dual battery into my 2011 Defender 90. Currently looking at a Redarc setup.

Can anyone recommend an auto electrician or similar who has actually completed a dual battery installation on Defender 90?

I have contacted some businesses but no one seems to have installed a dual battery on a Defender. I am in northern Suburbs in Melbourne so someone on my side of town would be great. Any recommendations or advice is appreciated!

Cannot help you with an installer, but I switched from a trackside unit to the basic redarc VSR in my defer and it worked as it should without issue.

Get the SBI12D, from memory it’s D at the end, it allows charge back to your starter if you say have solar connected to the aux battery.

I’ve installed these on the kids triton and BT50……

Not your side of town but Piranha in Bayswater/Boronia area are well experienced in Defender dual battery installs.

Hi Mudeye and welcome to AULRO.

Have a look at the Traxide SC80, its a lot cheaper and does heaps more than any Redarc.

Upload the PDF and have a good read of what the SC80 does.

Before u outlay your $$, make sure u don't want to install Lithium batteries sometime in the future, otherwise u will be buying another system that caters for Lithium... just a thought

I would think twice these days…….lithium would be my first choice….

However bigger investment and for those just starting out with aux batteries initial price can be daunting, I seen benefit in the investment for our 18 month/2 year trip we are about to start but up til than weekend and normal holidays It’s a little harder to justify. Current set up has given me piece of mind plus better performance.

the redarc VSR isn’t that big of an investment when starting out…..although OP might be going the whole hog with full redarc management system.

I fitted my 90 with a Devon 4x4 battery tray, fitting 2x optima D34M marine batteries.
These batteries were linked to a 500A rated Automatic Charging Relay, and a remote battery switch- both by Blue sea Systems. The winch runs thru the ACR, allowing BOTH batteries to split the discharge rate of the winch, there is also voltage cutout, and split/auto/combine mode for the batteries- effectively allowing the ability to jump start yourself, if things go flat.

The Blue Sea marine gear is IP63 rated, Which was one of my main purchasing decisions. The gear is battle tested on multi million dollar boats worldwide. While less features, I put this gear on a higher pedestal than consumer grade gear, due to the fact that salty and watery environments are 'extreme environments', so reliability is the key. This will also survive being inundated in the defender passenger seat box area- because we all know how watertight a defender is when it comes to river crossings, mud holes etc.
