Question Replace HUGE 3 inch exhaust on my 130 300tdi for smaller one ?

My 130 300 tdi came with a 3 inch exhaust. Interesting 'noise'.
I wonder how sensible that big size is in perceived economy / power ? It is due for replacement and I consider to go a bit smaller. 2 inch is to me plenty big.
Or am I wrong and should stick with the 3 inch ??

    thx

    Hi Jacob

3" might be too big in terms of adequate back pressure. There is a science behind it and others might be able to chime in with the scientific analogy around this.

    I have a 2 & 1/2" (63mm) exhaust (no mufflers) on my 1998 300Tdi 130 for over 10 years.

I can only ever hear the exhaust tone when the LH rear window is down and in a tunnel or drive beside a barrier.

    I like the sound actually.

I have had the car dyno tuned with this exhaust (along with other mods plus a pump tweak) and have plenty of power/torque.

I got same set as above but on a 300tdi 110. well actually mine is stock 60mm with 63mm (2.5 inch) bits of pipe put in where the mufflers were deleted. can't hear it over wind noise and engine noise and all the other noise, but I do wind down passenger window on a nice day to enjoy the sound!! Not at all obnoxious.. but distinctive.

Hello Jacob this might be of interest.

In 2014 I went to Beaudesert Exhaust the chap there is very knowledgeable, I think, and did research into what should suit a 300Tdi when these were new.

He said go no larger than 2 & 3/4 inch, fit heavy duty piece of flexible pipe towards the front and a "free flowing" muffler just before the pipe goes over the rear axle.

To enable easy removal of the nuts at the front leave just enough original pipe for tools to fit in.

So that is what his company fitted to mine. He also said it would be well suited to standard engine or if I made any change to the turbo in the future.

I later fitted a Turbo Technics UK, Hybrid Turbo - Variable Nozzle Turbo (VNT) that changed the performance with the turbo starting to be more effective at lower revs. Also fitted a specially made improved style inter-cooler to fit in the same place as the original inter-cooler. (ARE Cooling at Brendale Qld)

All this aids the 300Tdi pull along the camper sitting on 130 with a weight of around 3.6 tons. (I have a GVM up grade to still be legal).

Thanks Andrew for this every helpful reply. Sounds like the way to go - I live North of Dubbo (still 150 km) but have found a very good Exhaust maker there - they make all in house , will show him this .

Full size front mount intercooler, uprated turbo fan, and a properly tuned fuel injection pump alongside, free flowing exhaust has my 300tdi pulling along really well. OP, Without knowing your set up, maybe just try a resonator on the back of the 3inch pipe to fix the noise? and then look at the turbo, FIP and intercooler for performance.
