    Puma gearbox rear seal leak?

    G'day

My puma has developed a leak... well a leak that is more than the usual "no cause for concern" one on the transfer case - from what I believe is the rear gearbox seal.

Seeking confirmation on here and any advice around what else could be.

It's emanating from the small hole and joint from where the back of the gearbox and where the input shaft is for the transfer case.

I have an Ashcroft input shaft in there wonder if could be that?

It's leaking enough to drop onto exhaust as can see in images overnight (cleaned it all up 24 hours ago)

Tangentially, if it is the gearbox and the TC needs to come out, is my understanding correct that there is no way to check the level on the mt82 besides draining? And even then can be unsure how much is left inside?

    Cheers
    Carp

I've just dealt with this issue with my 2010 Defender 110...

On my 2021 trip, I realised that I had developed a leak out of this weep hole between the GB and TC housing. I checked my GB oil level (when it was hot) and oil started leaking out when I removed the bung. I knew the GB wasn't overfilled as I had changed the oil prior to my trip. I just assumed the GB rear main seal started to leak or maybe it could have been the front TC seal as it would leak out the same weep hole. I knew the previous owner had installed a Ashcroft Adaptor shaft but was unsure which version (probably the 1st "Silver" version due to the the time he had it installed).
Upon return from my trip I kept driving the Puma and the oil leak slowed down to a point where I put it off until recently as I had developed a whine which I 1st thought was in the GB but as time went on I was leaning more towards the whining coming from the TC.
About a month or so ago I bit the bullet and had the TC removed and reconditioned and had the Ashcroft ATB also installed as the same time. The TC ended up being the cause of the whining with one of the Intermediate bearings starting to fail.
While the TC was out I ended up replacing the old Ashcroft Adaptor (1st silver version) with the latest version (red version) and also replaced the Rear Main GB seal as there was signs of it leaking as well...
So, to date all is going well with no leaks and no whining... happy days

Cheers Rob - I have had the TC reconditioned and intermediate shaft sleeved at same time the Ashcroft adaptor was put in at about 96k km or 30k km ago / maybe 3 years ago so assumedly the older style adaptor. I'm not sure when they moved to new.

I'm leaning towards it being gearbox rear main seal but on musing on it some more I think I'll just keep an eye on the oil level and top it up now and then to be a few mm under the fill hole which is what I'm lead to believe 2.4L is about approximately. I guess could also be the input seal on TC.

I replaced all the oils (TC, GB, Diffs) myself probably 5k km ago and I'm sure I put in the specced 2.2L but perhaps not all drained out so the box overpressured? But even then I find it hard to believe it would be enough to make a huge difference... Just bad luck with it I guess!

Didn't end up fitting an ATB myself so maybe this will become the excuse to! Will just try limp it along till have another reason to drop the TC out.

Regarding the Ashcroft Adaptor versions = They're up to V3. V1 was silver in colour and only had a seal in it just like the main input seal on the TC. V2 was Blue in colour and had 1 internal seal I believe. V3 is red in colour and had 2 good sized internal seals and apparently is an improvement on preventing oil leaks.

Regarding the GB Oil Capacity - I've spoken to MR Automotive and they always fill the GB to that bottom filler plug level and said they have never had a issue in doing so. I believe if u fill it to this mark it takes about 2.5ltrs in total and with the GB having a breather, there shouldn't be a over-pressure issue (unless breather is clogged)

Great thanks. That solves it - keep a watchful eye on it and eventually fix when I drop box out for something else

Mine has had the same very minor leak for a couple of years. British Offroad checks it every service, but doesn't think it's urgent, so we just keep monitoring it every service.

Yet to check the levels in the box with all this wet weather - but mine looks to have accelerated a little unfortunately. Hoping when i pull the plug its right up to full and I can just do this!
