Interesting issue yesterday.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, but these are the original bearings - I have never had to do anything to the bearings on the County (seals, yes) - they are originals - nearly 700,000km. And I have yet to locate a parts book for the early coil spring Landrovers (pre-87). My Series 3 book shows they changed in 1980, and i suspect it is the same.

If nobody can assure me it is, I will have to locate it and compare, but if someone can tell me I'm wrong, i can save a bit of a search! Or look harder if they can tell me I am right. Actually, I am pretty sure I know where it is, but I'll have to pull it off the axle housing to compare it.

Tricky. Late SIII would seem to be FRC3925, and Defender FRC4320. So, is a County a Defender for the sake of this quest?

Strictly speaking, no. Defenders only came in 1989, my county is 1986. Although the term "Defender" is often used to refer to earlier coil sprung Landrovers (and even Series Landrovers), I have not been able to find a parts manual for pre-1987 vehicles, which is what is needed here. There were a lot of changes that I know of that were made for 1987 - the most obvious being the doors (and knock on changes due to the thicker doors), but not having been through this I don't know whether the stub axles were involved.

And when I was ordering parts, I was told the wheel bearing kit changed at this date - but this was apparently due to the change from oil lubrication to grease, whether this changes the stub axle I don't know.

Righto.

Found it - and it is not the same. But I am absolutely sure that this is because my 1981 Australian built S3 does not have the 1980 update - which was to same inner and outer bearings like the coil spring ones. This has the larger diameter for the inner one!

I'll have to clean up the old one. I am not sure when I will be able to pick up the parts - the bridge between here and the village is nearly two metres under at the moment. But since the rain has stopped and there is none forecast till Monday, should be able to get it by the end of the week.

Yes. The opinion here, while not definitive, was that they would be different and that the County/110/200-300TDi defenders would be the same and then TD5 were different again.
