    Interesting issue yesterday.

    Yesterday I ventured to go into town for the first time in a fortnight. I reasoned that there was no point in washing the mud off from my last trip to town (see my account of getting bogged on the way home), as it was going to get covered in mud again anyway. I admit I did have some qualms about the mud thickly caked over the wheels in particular.

    All went well, got out onto the bitumen OK. I kept the speed down to 80-90, because I had dropped the tyres to 22psi to help avoid getting bogged.

    Until about halfway into town, going up a hill, it hesitated momentarily. My immediate thought was air in the fuel, but it did not repeat. Next thought was a wheel bearing on the way out, so I stopped at the next suitable place and checked hub temperatures (and tyres). No problems. Driving round town, I became aware of a somewhat intermittent scraping sound from the RH back. I had lunch with a friend at his office, and after lunch we had a look underneath to see if there was stick caught up or similar. No, there isn't, but I did notice the mud between one wheel nut and the wheel seemed to be cracked. I tried twisting it by hand - and could! Out with the wheel spanner! Turns out all the wheel nuts were slightly loose (no more than half a turn), so I tightened them.

    This fixed the problem.

    What I think was happening is that the wheel being slightly loose resulted in the wheel slightly tilting the brake drum when there was side load on the wheel, and this resulted in the brake shoe grabbing. While there are countersunk screws that should keep the drum in place, these presumably came loose as well. I'll pull the wheel off after I pressure wash underneath and pull the drum to check it.

    I decided to investigate to see if there was any damage from the loose wheel this morning.

    Turns out this was very lucky. It was a wheel bearing - the loose wheel must have been coincidental. I was lucky to get home.

    Yes.

    The inner bearing is completely had it. I had to use a slide hammer to get the hub off. Turns out that the inner race of the inside bearing has obviously spun, and stuck to the stub axle. Pulling the hub past that obviously pulled the seal out. Getting the race off the stub axle took me most of the afternoon. I had to very carefully remove enough metal with a cutting wheel to where I could crack it with a hammer and chisel, and then was able to get it off with the slide hammer.

    Interestingly, the bits of bearing that came out are oily, not dry. The last few kilometres seem to have been using the half axle as the inner bearing!

    Hi John,
    A couple of times I've had inner races that are very loose when assembling on the stub axle.
    Probably not the best solution but I've centre punched the stub axle in a couple of spots to throw up high spots to 'grip' the bearing.

    A 'bodge' maybe but it has worked.

    Sounds like you were lucky !

    Thanks for the suggestion. I am a bit concerned that the inner bearing may be a bit loose or that I might have to file the stub axle to get it on.

    "Old school" fixes often work on old school cars, Colin. In some cases even a few sharp taps with the ball part of a ball-pein hammer can work as well.

    Does anyone know if the stub axle on the County is the same as the one on late Series 3 (1981)? I suspect it is, and if that is the case I think I have one that may be better than the one I have. I did not order a stub axle when I ordered parts - I did not have it apart then!
