    Puma Spigot Bearing Removal

While I'm waiting for my new clutch kit to arrive, I'm wanting to change out the spigot bearing, as it has a slight grease leak past the spigot seal.

From what I gather, the bearing housing has a blind end, so the hydraulic grease method might not work?

    1. Any tips or tool recommendations to remove it from my 2.4 Puma Defender?

    2. Also, does the flywheel need to come off to clear the bearing?

    Cheers
    Brid

    Puma Spigot Bearing Removal

After reading about folks having a lot trouble with this I got myself one of these and it made short work of it Pilot Bearing Puller 3 Jaws Bushing Gear Extractor Motorcycle Remover Heavy Duty | eBay

Pulled straight out on first attempt, so was money well spent.

Oh and done with the flywheel in place.

That looks better than the tool I made, so much so I bought 2 of them and would recommend this over a tool that you need to punch out the back of the bearing to get the tool behind the bearing.

In the end it was crazy east to remove the spigot bearing. Especially after so much time wasted as even cobalt drills wouldn't touch it.
I used a carbide pointed tree burr to enlarge the rear vent hole to about 5.5mm & ran an M6 x 1.0 tap through it. I then screwed in a 25mm long grease nipple, to get enough clearance.
I couldn't believe how gently, smoothly and easily it came out, with the grease gun!

Yes indeed as the bearing case is hard as hell, as you would expect of a bearing.
I used to tap out the back of the bearing case (easy to do) then i have a small made up tool that goes inside then i use a slide hammer, much the same as the old TD5 spigot bearing removal.

But the tool Lagerfan found looks gold, great find and great info... for all of us.

You can hydronic them out using a tight fitting sockett and bar and filling the spiggot bush with heavy grease……you can also carefully fold it in on its self…that’s a td5 but I’m asuming there similar

unfortunately nothing like a TD5 that used a solid spigot bush. the Defender TDCi (2007- ) uses a roller bearing so the outer case of the bearing is hardened. A pulling tool is the only realistic solution, the one in this thread is gold.
