Question What grade of Engine oil do people use for high mileage Tdci 2.4 Defender Pumas?

    Guys...

This follows on from this post: 2.4 Tdci Puma with 231,000kms - started using Engine oil (1ltr/4>5k kms approx.)

Just after some people's experiences with high mileage 2.4ltr Tdci Defender Pumas with the grade of Engine oil they use...

Brief history - I'm trying to determine why the sudden oil usage on my 2010 2.4 Tdci Defender with 232,000kms on the clock. I currently use a Penrite 5w30 Full-Syn Oil and this has been fine up until the last 2 oil changes. For the past 2 services my engine has used a 1ltr of oil per 5000kms (Service intervals is at every 7500kms).
The Turbo appears to be running normally (sound wise) - There is evidence of oil getting through and into the Intercooler and into the Intake Manifold (this is visually seen from oil residue around the intake manifold).
I do not have a EGR & the Injectors, to my knowledge are still the original ones and seem ok but do have a slight rattle when coasting along (ie no load).
I've had people mention that the Injector copper seals could be the cause but I cannot see how as the injectors are located outside the rocker cover and thus any leakage would be visually evident around the injector itself...

I've been told and have read that some recommend to try a slightly thicker grade of oil (example: either a 5w40 or a 10w40 Full-Syn oil which work fine for our Aussie hotter conditions).

What "grade of oil" do people use for high mileage Tdci Puma's?

Using a 10w40 or a 5w40 grade of Full-Syn oil - will that cause any issues?

    thanks in advance...

I do not think you will get a definitive answer on this, just what people do themselves. . The big factor here is the required Ford specifications, which are chosen by Ford for this particular engine. Our 2008 2.4 Puma has slightly less mileage than yours and I recently topped up the engine oil. It does not bother me that it needed topped up. The handbook says to check your oil level so Ford/JLR must expect it to use oil at sometime in it's lifetime.
There are additives in every engine oil and the additives in the Ford specification oil are different to those in another oil with different specification. The additives might be much the same but the concentration of each cocktail is tailor made to perform in certain ways specific to the engine. The 5W part of the oil was chosen so as to get lubrication quickly throughout the engine on start ups. I would not worry about top ups provided it is not an inordinate amount over short periods of time.
Maybe someone else will be along who has an engine that has 500.000 kms and never needed a top up. You can buy engine oil additives that you can add to your engine which are like treacle when being poured. These are advertised to work on worn engines and stop oil use. I would not use them as they are bound to have an effect on how the oil performs, especially on starting up. If it thickens the oil it will interfere with 5W part of the oil doing it's job.
I had a conversation with a sales rep who used to work for a major oil company about engine oil. If I get time I will put the jist of it up.

    Why is that?

I've tried searching the web and little to none recommend using the 10w40 Full-Syn oil. Some say that u can use a 5w40, but no one says 10w40.
Would a 10w40 meet all the different weather conditions one would find in Australia? (ie: Hot & Cold)

    Guys...

Here's a video clip showing you the amount of blowby that's coming out of my 2010 2.4 Tdci Defender 110...

From the conversations I've had, it looks like I may be up for a new Turbo... but the only thing is that the car is running/driving fine (other than oil usage).

Does this amount of blowby seem normal or abnormal?
