I fitted an N70 alongside the original battery ie running north/south (the same way as original) Nice snug fit too!

If you search through Projects and Tutorials, you'll find a number of photos of various installations.

.... and I suppose the last photo in that series is a shot of the mechanic who helped you fit the batteries.

Your battery box looks like it has already had the floor modified (by the PO if it wasn't you?).

Have a look at this pic:

You can just see the remnant of the old floor at the ?front?. That is what my battery box looks like. There is a low/recessed section in the floor just wide enough for 1xN70, aligned N-S.

Lou - yes, I mean another N70, but you can see from the profile in the pic above that the floor of the battery box is sloping (apart from the N-70 width recess). So fitting anything else without a new floor isn't really possible.

But like I said, a fairly easy mod.

EDIT - Rangieman's post makes it sound like the defenders might have switched to a completely flat floor. But my 1987 county is as I described above.

I am using an N70ZZ which claims to be a combined cranking and deep cycle battery. It is 100Ahour, and about 600cca. This will be fine for a petrol, but I don't know if I would use it as a cranking battery for a diesel. I use mine for my second / deep cycle battery, and occasionally to boost the cranking battery in the cold. It is marketer as Commander, being a part of Century. It is a sealed wet acid.

i'm getting confised unless we have different battery boxes because we have 2 optimas in our defender and battery box is unmodified
same in our new defender....but we have the battery that came in the defender with an optima as a second.

in saying that though optimas are small batteries......but you said fitting anything!!

As I said in the EDIT at the end - maybe defenders have changed to having a flat floor - can anyone confirm? I have an '87 county - so technically not a defender.
