For some reason LR axles decreased in strength A LOT, about the time they went to 24 spline on all vehicles (early '90's).

Ashcroft have tested genuine (1.24") 24 spline axles and found they break at about the same torque as earlier (1.1") 10 spline axles.

They went from making them from steel to making them from cheese.

Of course - the lack of proper lubrication on the defender doesn't help - which is where your wear comes from. Make sure you pull the inner seals to run oil lubrication.

I could`nt agree more I snapped 2 rear axles a couple of weekends ago playing on a few rocks, I have just thrown in a couple of new Britpart ones for the momment which were cheap at about 50 bucks each until I can hold of some better shafts and flanges.

Barry Ward can supply probably 30 or more different LR axle upgrades. He is a gent to deal with.

As a guide a kit for 24 spline Disco rear inc larger flanges and twin lipped hub oil seal to allow wheel bearings to run wet is around $730.00.
