    Maxi Drive Flange Part Number?

    Can anyone tell me what the maxi drive part number is? I have mde859x stamped on the flanges to go on my defender. Just wondering if that is the right part number because I am having trouble fitting it

    Hi Azza,

    Did you fit the longer spline axles that the 'x' version flanges are designed for? If you are trying to fit them to the front or standard length factory axles then they will be too long. If you have the longer splined axles, MDE 1724/5x's , then they should fit, but I have had problems in the past due to slight burring and have had to knock the axle end on some hardwood to get them down far enough to fit the circlip.

    So all you need to do is buy the MDE 859 without the 'x' on the end. But beware, if the CV splines are burred even a little, it is quite difficult to get them on. A die grinder to clean up the outer splines etc will help a lot.
    Don't forget to do the oil mod (Removing/ damaging the inner stub axle seal)so that the bearings and splines now run in oil from the swivel housing, or all will be wasted.

    Thanx Justin Ive already taken out the axle seal in swivel and also spindel seal and replaced the hub seal with the oil seal.

    Thats when I tried to put the maxi flanges on and relised that they were wider then the original ones ...

    The splines on the cv's are good but will do what you said with the die grinder its just that tommorrow is sunday and where I got them from is shut.

    Do you think it will be ok for a day if I put the old flanges back on and seal the rubber dust cap on the flange.Its the missus daily driver and she needs the bloody car monday and I havent even done the passenger side yet..

    I would've left the inner axle seal in there, othewise the swivel housing drains most of its level out into the differential, causing poor lubrication for the CV, wheel bearings and splines. Especially if the vehicle sits on a slight angle for a while
    Only remove/ damage the spindle seal behind the needle roller brg. This allows the swivel housing oil to be the lube for the hub and splines, and ensures the level is adequate even on a side slope.
    As regards the standard flange and rubber cap, seal it on it'll be fine. Even a slight leak will be the only problem.

    No worris Justin from what I read in the good oil section it said to remove both inner and spindle seals.Maybe I should put them back in then ...

    Just refit the inner swivel housing axle seal and damage the spindle one on the front behind the needle roller, and on the rear remove the spindle seal completely.

    Thanx justin...Rear was done when we bought it one less thing I had to do but I did notice then when we pulled the spindle off there was no grease in the cv just oil so I guess that makes sense that oil can get passed the seal, I was just doing what was written in the good oil section.

    No worris you live and learn.

    Do you think rather then pull it all apart again that it will be right without the spindle seal and then I can just undo the swivel bolts that bolt to the axle housing and replace the seal?
    Just damage the seal a little to let oil in evenm though it was getting oil lubed anyway?

    Then the passenger side I will do as you said ...

    Well all done except for the correct Maxi drive flanges that I will pick up tomorrow.

    I put new inner axle seals in cause I had them anyway when i bought the kit and also removed the spindle seal.We also just put a little HTB on the bearings, stub axle and splines just for good measure.Also added 350ml of 80/90 gear oil to fill plug on each swivel housing and 1.70lt in diff.I had some one shot grease that came with the kit but thought it would be better to just add oil

    When I drained the passenger side it was a milky brown colour and evidence of water Iam thinking it came in through the seal on the back of the swivel housing but replaced both all of them too.

    Also supplied me with a incorrect tie rod end so the passenger side is done but not drivers but dosent matter as Ive gotta rebuild the pitman arm as well.

    So again Justin thanx for your help it was just the inner axle seal that confused me some people say remove/damage then when you said leave it in cause the oil will drain back to the diff when on a angle I thought yeah that makes sense.But even when I spoke to the LR dealer that I bought the flanges from he said to remove it.But there in now and I dont want to have to do that job again in a hurry, years of mud dust and muck mixed with grease and oil is so much fun ...Plus I have beer to drink that I did't have time to drink.

    Also a big thanx to my brother for the free labour and the cartoon of beer he bought, a offsider that works for nothing and brings a cartoon First time he's ever worked on a LR.
