    Front end wobble

I have not had time to get the car into the garage yet. Being a novice, is it hard to change these bushes? or do I need to have them pressed out / in at a shop? The vibration starts when there is a rough patch in the road at 80 - 90 kph. It will then continue until I change speed, or go around a corner. I don't think it is a wheel balance issue, as the steering feels slopy. I don't even know what a panhard bush is, let alone know where to find it. Any simple instructions would be helpful. (Like the one of: "have someone move the steering wheel while I look at the steering components from underneath")
Just remember, I'm a simple kind of guy.

    Cheers,

    Ken

If you look under the front of the car, there is a bar which runs from the chassis on one side to the front axle on the other. It is in front of the axle assembly.

    This is the panhard rod.

If you look under there while someone rocks the steering to and fro (basically taking up the freeplay, plus a little extra) you can see if there is any movement in the bushes at each end of the rod.

Any play requires bush replacement. Removing the panhard rod from the car is easy (spanners) but bush replacement will require a press.

After resetting my swivel preloads on Christmas day, I suspect your vehicle requires that job. It is technically reasonably simple, but if you want to replace the swivel seal at the same time (I did) it can be a little time consuming. I also did my front wheel bearings while I was pulling things apart.

    Front end wobble

Well I got under the Defender today, and had my son turn the wheel back and forth. The bushes seemed fine, (no visible looseness when the tension taken up, and released). Took it down to a tyre shop, and had them balance the front wheels. One was way out of balance, so probably lost a lug weight out in the bush. No sign of the "Front end wobble" on the short trips from the tyre shop, and I made sure I went on some high speed bumpy roads, so may have fixed the problem. Not bad for $15 dollars. Thanks for all the help, and will keep you all informed if it returns.

    Cheers,

    Ken
