Thread: Insuring an imported Td5 90

In Australia you have two basic types of insurance on motor vehicles.

The first one is generally referred to as CTP (compulsory third party) insurance which covers personal injury to third parties not property damage.

In all states of Australia this is a statutory (legally) required cover and insurers have to be licensed by each state to provide this cover. Provided your car is capable of being registered you should have little trouble getting this cover.

Before you can register your vehicle your CTP insurer will be required to notify the “registering authority” (Road and Traffic Authority) that you have paid the premium. In some states the registering authority also provide the CTP cover as part or registering the vehicle. In other states it’s a two step process.

The other insurance covers damage to the vehicle itself and or property/vehicle damage to other parties as a result of an accident. There are a number of specialist 4X4 insurance brokers who are affiliated with 4X4 clubs/activities and generally you will not have trouble insuring yur vehicle.

It’s my understanding that if your 90 was imported into Australia then registering and insuring will be less of a problem. If I recall correctly 90’s were only brought into Australia by LR for a couple of years 2001 to 2003.

Can't comment on any difficulties you might have getting the car imported/registered, but I have a 2004 TD5 90 insured with RAA (Like your AA) for $470 a year fully comprehensive, so GBP235 in your money. No-one under 25 to drive it, free windscreen per year, choice of repairer, and BTW I am 47, so don't know if that helps at all.

Which state are you looking at moving too, and how modified is the 90?

My insurance will all mods declared in QLD is about $900 a year. That covers me on and off road anywhere in Australia apparently.

You shouldnt have too many issues, but some modifications may make registration more of an issue.

No Major mods to the vehicle currently, might make a few more before I ship it over as the cost of bits over there compared to here seems madness, e.g. Tubular winch bumper here is the euquivalent of less than $600 and have seen them there for $1200.

Have a few queries on that so will post when I get a mo...and will add a photo of her.

My 90 was easy to get insurance but the big 4 insurance company will not insure an import. They will do CTP but not fully comp

So i got my insurance with Shannons (who are still a big insuracne company ) who have given me a great price and service.

BTW As i did with my 90, get all the toys you want on the car while in the Uk as they will be cheaper there. ie tread plate, steering guards, diff guards, rear wheel carrier etc. Belive me won't really effect the import process.

my 90 is a import too (1987), insured through TCIS (a broker - familiar with 4wd clubs,etc) with all mods - even 35's and is agreed value of $13K for bout $600 ish a year - covered here there and everywhere - bar comps.

do not modify before you come vehicle inspectors are tossers so keep it fairly basic ...they are worse than the M.O.T. testers back in the old country mate

mmm i was talking about steering guards , tread plate rear wheel carrier and bolt on stuff like that

Not 40"tyres portals and stuff like that .

When i got mine tested it took 2 mins and cost me near $300 for the compliance plate and import and modification plate. The chap who i was told by the transport department (afterwards) that he was the strictest in QLD. But all he did was check that the glass was glass for cars. The seat belts had the correct kite mark, and the engine and chassis numbers matched with the import papers. And that was it. He did not care about the rear wheel carrier or the rear NAS step and tow hitch, the A Bar or the so called roll bar in my 90 soft top. Same thing happen with the Queensland transport when they looked at it . And as for the roadworthy well compared to the UK MOT it is an absolute joke
All the " experts "on forums worried the hell out of me before i imported mine and becasue of that i did not import my other 90 which i whish i had now
BTW my 90 had at the time of import steering guards , A BAr, Rear nas step and tow bar , Diff Guards, So call roll Bar and not one of them to my knowledge was ADR


Ask Psimpson7 he had the same when he imported his 90 and his 90 is alot more modifieid than mine .
