Have you looked hard enough to see how fugly they are?:)
Take a look at the Ford/Mazda equivalent (still Thai), at least it looks better than a Triton, but having said that, the mitsus around here seem to be trouble-free

I agree the land rover for towing is not the greatest but does get the job done,i have a 300tdi defender auto and towing a 20 foot boat she doesnt like it much,in saying that i wouldnt get rid of my landy as its offroad performance is awesome and has great fuel economy also i am 6'5" tall and there is not a lot of room left in the cab once i am in there,i have a mate with a new triton diesel,it goes real well but damm its ugly,i dont like mitsubishi diesel engines i am a ex diesel mechanic and mitsu diesels were not the most robust of engines,i have another mate with a BT50 and that thing flies!! awesome performance from the variable geometry turbo 3 ltr but when towing his camper trailer it really chews the diesel.
Land rover defender with a 3ltr 4D4 style hilux power plant with an auto option would be great if land rover ever produced such a vehicle i think they would sell a lot more and they would be the ultimate tow vehicle....Wes.
I just bought my defender in September 09 and tow 2t workman's trailer, have tools/fridge in the back, and two & half fatboy workers everyday. I reckon it tows better than anything I've tried. I put polyair-bags to help with the ride too.
My mate has a manual Nissan patrol which he uses for furniture removal and tows about the same. We keep up with him and use less fuel (but I'm less lead-footed than him)
Both good tow vehicles.
problem is thats not (well I dont think so) a fair comparison as they have different engines and gearboxs with different gearing...
Ian came home the other week saying he wasn't impressed with the towing from the puma he said it sat at 80 up hills etc but wouldn't pull away from that not struggling just didn't really want to pull.....he then came back to me and said after talking to someone without realising he reckon he was pulling a smidge over 3.5ton in which he then very promptly said he thought it had towed bloody well considering the weight.
