By the looks at half the price the ebay ones look pretty good to me:angel:
I bought a pair from British Offroad 12 months ago for $120 each if that helps.
They maybe more expensive now.
i bust a hi-tuff axle on the weekend and have now picked up a set of ashcrofts the difference in quality is visable. the splines on my hytuffs had been over cut and ran through into the shoulder.
i'm pretty easy on the right foot and wasn't doing anything really extreme yet broke one and have a mate with ashcrofts who couldn't be heavier on the loud peddle if he tried, but as yet has had no issues and has had his fitted perhaps 5 times longer than i had mine.
if you can go the ashcrofts - you won't regret it, but you may if you go the other way!
perhaps the guy who used to do the work is now in charge and has got an apprentice to now do the work.
That is interesting - any pics of the broken HTE axle???
HY-TUFF/HI-TOUGH/AMS6418 is a superior steel alloy to that used by Ashcroft and others. However - MD used to be about $700/pr for axles, and now HTE are less than the competitionj (so I have heard). That makes me wonder if HTE are still using the same material...
Rovertracks are the next cheapest after HTE... Might spend some money with Keith...
A rear kit with flanges from HTE is 775+GST.
Price quoted to me as of last week
That sounds about right.
DaveS was quoted $490/pr front (24/23 spline) and $520/pr rear without flanges last week. I assume those prices were ex GST.
Keith (rovertracks) gave me a price of US$400/pr for fronts (24/23 or 24/30 if you want to fit toyota longfields) and ~US$120 shipping. So AU$563 landed at current exchange rates.
Jeff (McNamara) quoted me $650/pr for 24/23 and $750/pr for 24/30 in April this year. Not sure if those prices include GST or not.
Ashcroft are GBP245 + shipping for 24/23 fronts (AU$445+shipping). The 5 year warranty is impressive.
Thanks all. I might keep my grease packed bearings on the front a little longer. Jim
I reckon the rate of flogging of the splines might have something to do with the wheel bearings. Some of the non adjustable wheel bearings seem to have a little play in them, so I wonder if that play causes more rapid wear of the splines?
I know my TD5 defender flogged the factory splines out every 50,000k's. But since having the bearings rebuilt to county spec, ie adjustable, and fitting a cheap set of drive flanges from the UK - it's done 60,000ks already and no visible wear. The original wheel bearings had a fair bit of slop in them from new, so I have a pet theory it was the loose bearings causing the spline wear.
got ours from all 4x4 spares at newcastle for $110 for both and by the way another company took over maxi drive
NO one took over Maxi drive barry started hytuff as another company making the old maxi axles and flanges.
as for the cheap ones talk about above....I have them I paid 140bux for the pair nothing wrong with them...and great if you want to go oil fed and much better then the stupid little rubber end caps that can get knocked off or split.
I also have maxi flanges on the rear and the maxi's are much chunkier and stick out further.....and no mine are the old ones as they do not have the cut outs for the alloy wheels...even though my old ones fit with the alloys (just tight). Also just so people know the cheaper ones fit under the factory alloys and you don't need to remove the centre cap like you do with the maxi's:)
(this is on my disco but I'm pretty sure they are the same for both in the earlier models)
