For me, I have no skill in this area and little time so it works well for me buying off the shelf.

fitted some to ours last year, good quality and just up the road for me ;)
My Mud Rails arrived before my Defender....
does that make the Defender the accessory? :p;)
I got mine from Rovacraft here in Perth, I think $120 a pair more or less, They are Britpart. Very simple to make if you have the time, they use 25mm angle, makes drilling and welding in the captive nuts simple, a quick spray or powder coat and some hi tensile bolts.
They are brilliant, as I can now easly move my feet from the accelarator to the brake (very usefull) and roll down the window with out having to stop the car. Down side is that if you are tall you hide behind the B pillar and your eye level is higher than the side windows (I am 6'4").
