checking panel output

Be careful doing this.

What is being proposed here is to short circuit the array output; if you aren't careful you will cause an arc between the plug/socket and the multimeter probe. Measuring an array output current is only attempted with a DC clamp meter, for good reason. The arc caused - while only small - could ruin your plug/socket, making it either impossible to plug back in or a bad contact if it does go back in.

Who has suggested that? Go back and read what I wrote. The meter is put in series with the panel, not in parallel which would short it out.

I realise electronics has changed since I trained as a radio technician back in the mid-Sixties but I still know how to measure current.

No worries, I must've just mis-read.

I would've said electronics actually haven't changed a whole lot since the sixties actually, just become needlessly complex and annoyingly small.
