I suppose everyone has their hobby but I struggle to see the point of spending $29,000 to have a $2,000 vehicle minus power steering, minus aircon, with a 65 mile range and 'OK' acceleration, running on coal that is burned somewhere else?

    Yes Indeed, and thats $US,
I'm also struggling with the concept of what goes on in ones mind that undertakes such a project.

That said, I'm in the midst of converting/molesting my $4500 Series 3 Lightweight to EV, and I have no valid reason for doing so, its just a project that no one has done before.
My motor alone cost me $7500. HPEVS AC-51 AC motor and controller kit
I'll let you look up the price of CALB180 cells, and I need 45 of them.

I can tell you right now its nothing to do with being good for the environment, nor is it anything like wanting to be seen to be doing the 'right thing' for the environment. Im not sucked into this whole climate change thing either , thats load of baloney , the planet is just doing what the planet has done for billions of years.

However if everyone went electric it would be a really good thing, it would remove the worlds dependance on Middle East Oil, and dry up the main source of terrorist funding to the Islamic States. And I believe this is the reason Governments and Oil Companies are now allowing the development of alternate technologies in this century.

(PS my EV LR wont be running on coal that is burned somewhere else, It will be running for free from the 5kw PV array I installed on the shed roof. And I suggest the same goes for most EV owners , at least when they charge at home. )

This project dates back to 2010/11 and of course things will be a bit different if done now or in the immediate future. For one thing, one hopes that AC motors will become the norm so regenerative braking can happen. I wouldn't like to live with a heavy 4WD with only standard brakes to keep your speed down hills in check. DC is fine for flat terrain but a bit hopeless in the mountains. Hopefully some time soon someone will package the latest and greatest Tesla cells into modules that can be easily fitted to aftermarket conversions to save all that weight of old generation cells.

Yes A/C sure is the way ahead, you can of course configure DC motors to have Regen Braking but the brushes last about 5 minutes.
I no longer need consider a Disc brake Conversion as my A/C Regen Braking (plus drums) will be more than adequate

In the US DIY converters are beginning to use salvaged Tesla drive units & recycled Tesla Battery packs.
    but they are rather expensive,

this one is a Canadian supplier EVTV Motor Verks Store

there was an 80's 4 door RRC electric vehicle I read about in the late 90's, I cant remember if it was rural NSW or SA based. Weight was the biggest issue with it from memory as it basically had a heap of full sized wet cell batteries up front. I think it was a VM diesel conversion.

Yes the bloke says in his summary that he is charging it at work. Might as well just steal petrol from work!

Why assume he is stealing power?? Given the amount of power some of the I work at plugging one car in wouldn’t be a drop on the ocean.

There is ads on the tv in qld advertising charge your car $1/day, springer low voltage have an outlet in their carpark for free car charging...
