I actually like EVs .... and most cars... But gee's, something is sad when we do a song and dance saying "look how amazing they are, they can do a road trip". Can you make my EV a Citroen Oli .... Its where an EV should be, small, extremely functional... small battery, small motor .... a city car that would do most of the driving people need (as lets face it, nearly everyone in australia will also own a proper car if they have an electric throw-away).

That type of thing is here now. Not a concept car - a real car you can buy. 25800 drive away. 210k range, but will probably beat that around town. That's nearly twice the range of the original Nissan leaf, and unlike the leaf the battery will likely last a very long time.

Personally I think australians all aspire to own dual cab utes. It's what we've been persuaded that we want and need. I often hear people say "I just want a cheap little city run around" while they keep buying Hiluxes and Rangers. Well looks like we're going to see if that's what people actually are prepared to buy.

There is a YT channel called "redriven". They review used cars and have a mechanic speak about the issues with them. It's a constant theme of plastic parts getting brittle and failing as they age. Most cars seem to have lots now. Apparenttly plastic sumps is also a thing. which means it's impossible to jack under them for engine removal/adjusting things.

I remain convinced that the service life of modern cars is 10 years. If you get longer than that you're on bonus time.

I think you nare onto something there .not EV as such but re plastic parts , I know in russia from reading russian telegram car forums they import geely for taxis etc and they dont like the cold say -12 to -20 c and the plastic falls to bits and even the accelator pedals snap and brake pedals, only 18 months old [bigwhistle]

my brother is a lawyer and has many chinese clients and he recently went to china with them and found some interesting stuff out from them.. BYD is subjet to many protests etc as they done support models in china sometimes after only 18 months as they get replaced and they done produce many spare parts so already chinese people cant get somne parts ... even had BYDs being burnt in "protest" to try and get the chinese government to force BYD to behave better. no parts sometimes for 3 months on new models...


I hace a friend here in NZ who works in a big motor group that sells BYD as part of their franchises who regals me with horror stories of lack of ordinary parts such as suspension bits etc not availble and you hace to buy almost somplete "corners " of a car suspesnion not just a single part eg tie road etc if it is bent eetc . when they get electrical looms in for wiring somethimes they are for the EU models and apparently are wired differently and dont work correctly. I like EVs and have one but dont want to be first off the block as BYD use customers to learn at my expense and time . the 2nd hand EV shops here are overwhelmed with MG and BYD with faults that the dealer is having trouble "solving"

This is not what I would want to hear.

People think when a car is sold for say 50k. That's that that's the cost of making the car. But the actual cost to make the car is only a few thousands. What actually costs is the design, tooling, factory, and support infrastructure. The last one .. supplying parts is a massive logistical deal. I hope this is not the case, but if you don't do that it would help make cars a lot cheaper. :o

Let's just hope they sort it out in australia.

I spoke to my mate with the BYD. Off the road in October, they are hopeful that if the parts arrive on time they might get the car in Feb. There is a chance that not all the parts will be available so there might be some bits missing when they get it. Before the crash they had something that needed to be replaced, and there was a multi month wait for that too.

They are frustrated and I sense that they wouldn't buy a BYD again.

BYD acknowledge the problem and claim they are working on in. I guess we will find out.

I would expect that if they don't address this they will find themselves with regulatory issues in the near future.

I also think they could hamper the sales of all the chinese cars in Aus.

The Chinese EV "market" is a kind of Ponzi scheme, writ large. It's only a matter of time before Beijing can no longer prop it up. The ROW are getting tired of being a dumping ground for the things. Domestic market EVs are rapidly falling into the "Tofu Dreg" category, with absolute horror stories appearing in their tens of thousands, and this from a country with a regulated internet. Unfortunately this will inevitably taint all EVs if it keeps up. The cars we see here are pretty good, really, but they are hugely subsidised by the domestic market garbage and by the CCP. And they are rapidly losing the huge US market.

Time will indeed tell.
