    Battery Tech Thread

Couldn’t find another one here so I’ve started this one. Not for discussion of EV’s etc particularly, there are other threads for that, but just on battery tech itself.

Saw this today - quite interesting. Quite a technical article, but worth watching IMO. 👍

If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

Battery tech and energy storage is evolving at a rate which is head spinning at times. Great idea and thanks for the thread. I think Batteries are an energy store as is Pumped Hydro and Hydrogen .... but will leave those topics to other threads on them.

My two Flow batteries are still working well. (RFX)

Suspect the solid state batteries you shared will turn the current gen Lithium on their heads. Once a few items are resolved. Samsung and others are racing ahead with them.

"What makes solid-state batteries the next big thing?

Thanks to the solid electrolyte having a smaller footprint, solid-state batteries promise some two to ten times the energy density of lithium-ion batteries of the same size." "Solid-state electrolyte means the batteries can withstand more discharge and charge cycles than lithium-ion batteries, as they don’t have to suffer electrode corrosion caused by chemicals in the liquid electrolyte or the build up of solid layers in the electrolyte that deteriorates battery life. Solid-state batteries could be re-charged up to seven times more, giving them a potential lifespan of ten years as opposed to the couple of years a lithium-ion battery is expected to effectively last for. "

As always the research and Proof is needed "prefixed the advantages of solid-state batteries with ‘could’ as they’ve yet to prove themselves out in the real-world in a consumer gadget let alone an electric car. "

Japan jointly must have it in the bag already as it was going to have Solid state in EVs at the now delayed Tokyo Olympics ( Not just Toyota - "Toyota, Honda, and Nissan teamed up to create the Libtec consortium to develop solid-state batteries, with the former supposedly due to reveal a solid-state battery powered car at the Tokyo Olympics this year. A little on LIBTEC which is Lithium Ion Battery Technology and Evaluation Center NEDO:NEDO Chairman Visits Consortium for Lithium Ion Battery Technology and Evaluation Center (LIBTEC) and Meets Dr. Akira Yoshino, LIBTEC President and 2019 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry
