Cleverer people than me have been producing their own ammonia - from thin air, and then running the ICE cars on the hydrogen it produces.
I must admit I'm wary of some of the more optimistic comments and threads I see on solutions to the problem of storage of energy produced by intermittent electricty generation sources like windmills and solar. In particular while I've been a fan of the Hydrogen economy since the early 80's I've felt that the recent optimism about H2 as a energy store and use in fuel cells under-estimates the well-known technical difficulties of doing this (especially the production, storage and transmission of H2 on the scale required at an affordable cost).
I have also been surprised with the recent enthuisam for ammonia as an energy store since liquid ammonia is pretty nasty stuff if it ever leaks. However a recent Royal Society paper : https://royalsociety.org/-/media/pol...y-briefing.pdf is well worth reading and makes several interesting points of which two struck me especially : the energy density (ie kWh/l) of liquid ammonia is higher than that of liquid hydrogen, and, of course ammonia is much more easy to liquify (and keep liquified) than H2. A contributor to this high volumetric energy density is the surprising (to me) fact that liquid ammmonia stores more H2/liter than liquid H2 (due I assume to the lower density of liquid H2 cf liquid NH3).
There is a great deal more research, Development and Demonstration needed on the use of ammonia, but if you read the article you do feel that the arguments in favour of NH3 vs H2 are pretty strong - and certainly has changed my opinion on this subject.

It’s also a great natural refrigerant.
