The system looks so simple and effective - but it's not legal in Oz as it doesn't meet our standards. Obviously, our standards are behind Europe.

Didn't see the show on Ch7 (don't watch it normally).

This system has been around for more than 10 year in Europe as the D2's all have ISOfix child seat mounts in the back seat. Our ADR's are so behind in this matter it's not funny, especially when you read about the reasoning behind the ISOfix system.

I have heard of people importing the seats from USA and Europe but as to the legality in the event of an accident one can only wonder what insurance issues may arise.

Makes you think about the future. Driving a car looking in a virtual windscreen with the road projected onto it whilst your sitting backwards driving. As it's safer than having your head thrown forward in a collision. You never know it could happen.

Look at it this way, whilst Standards Australia makes a $$$ from all compliance and testing we have laws that say everything must have an AS approval.

Example: Motorcycle helmets :mad: Shoei helmet with AS sticker = $800.00
Same identical helmet (Dot/Snell approved) = $300.00 and Not legal for use in Oz.

Whilst theres a $$$ to be made, we'll continue to get done over.

Seat belts became compulsory in Australia (1970 Vic) before anywhere else and decades before they did in most other places. Air bags were only invented because Americans refused to have compulsory seat belt laws, and were later introduced to supplement seat belts.

Not terribly accurate - in this area Australia led the way. The main reason why the ISO system child seat is not accepted in Australia is that there is a pre-existing, incompatible, standard that became mandatory in Australia before child restraints were even thought of in most markets.

After watching the videos of a child seat in an accident, if I had baby kids, I wouldn't care of the ISOfix was illegal - it's a damn sight better than forward facing seats.

Not sure when Sweden made them compulsory. Worth noting that the term "compulsory" in this context has several different meanings - fitting them to new cars, wearing them, whether these rules apply to all seats or only front seats.

Edit: According to Wikipedia, while Volvo was the first to routinely fit them in Sweden, Victoria was the first place worldwide to make their wearing compulsory.

To bring a Landrover theme back into the thread, it is worth remembering that the first extensive use of seatbelts in cars was by the Snowy Mountains Authority in the early fifties, mostly in Landrovers. In an attempt to reduce fatalities they fitted them to all their vehicles and made it a firing offence not to wear them. It was the data they gathered from this exercise that led to the Victorians and later other governments to make seat belts compulsory.

The first Landrover I bought in 1963 was an ex SMA Series 1, which had had the seat belts removed, but the anchorages were still there, and I immediately fitted belts, having used them on my previous car (VW).

thats my thinking. thay can send me to jail but my kids alive. if not i wouldnt care anyway

posted above is that D2 seats are already set up for ISO fix, if so would d2 seats just bolt into a d1?

No they have a different mount and are taller.
