View Full Version : Identifying an old Warn winch

G'day all,
I was given a Warn winch a while ago, and starting to think about getting it rebuilt and fitted.
I don't have any idea what model it is though, and thus don't know if its worth the effort, or if its big enough for a 110. My boss had it on his land cruiser, probably in the 80s, but he never used it, and it has been in his shed since, dusted by his table saw.
Sorry, I haven't photographed it, a bit tricky being in a sawdusty crate tangled in wire rope.

The motor is mounted parallel to the drum rather than off the end of it, the drum itself is around 20cm wide.
There is a wheel that appears to be a ratched arrangement with the shaft parallel and between the drum and motor shafts.
It has a wired remote control, with a single switch on the rubber hand piece.
Uses wire cable/rope, through a hawser fairlead rather than a roller fairlead.

Is it one of the 8000lb high mounts that I read are popular with competitive sorts, or is it something else that Warn don't make anymore-and thus is it worth repairing? Big enough to pull an Isuzu County out of trouble or better suited to the SWB series?
thanks for any help:cool:

Hi Sprint,
Similar motor position, with hawser instead of rollers, the wheel thing to the left is similar if i pretend its not coated in surface rust, and the black box is distinctly a different shape. Right side bracket appears to be a different casting too. Remote is the same though.
I've been looking at Warn sites and thats the only one (8274-50?) with the same motor placement I have found, so thought it might have been an out-of-production winch.
Being 20 odd years or older, were there any other Warn models with that same motor position?

I'd take a photo but its not easy to access and tangled in wire rope+sawdust, in a crate...

It sounds like either an 8274 or its predecessor. Either way, one of the best winches made.

:eek:Thanks Ben, Sprint,
I take it that it is appropriate for a 110 then? You know, for pulling out Toyotas...
Guess I better put it on the queue for a rebuild

anything like this puppy?

given the description, it could well be a earlier m8274, the -50 has only been around since about 1998 afaik

'fraid not Sprint, much much more like the Warn in the photo you posted. Mine might look different to the 8274 because of missing shrouds, but im pretty sure you picked the right one first go.
I do like the band brake on the Bellview, reminds me of the steam logging winches of old :)
EDIT=> i'll google what an m8274 looks like shortly
EDIT 2=> i'm a clever trevor sometimes, I now know the difference is the -50 designation

I should also add that the control box in the first photo is a much later one, normally they're a plain black box with a raised W with the remote socket in the middle of the W

the gear casing on the left of the winch looks different to what i recall the earlier ones looking like too, but pretty much you either have a pre ~1998 m8274 or or less possibly a bellview

is it suitable..... well.... IMO its one of the finest winches thats ever been bolted to the front of a Landrover, and in the words of a local ARB rep "An 8274? nah, only the competition boys use them".... make what you want of that!

Thanks again Sprint, thems some reassuring words.
It does sound a lot like the pre 1998 version m8274-you've described the black box bit well. I just looked at some sites with Warn Bellviews and the original Bellview, and its not quite those two.
Better not tell my boss he gave me a good'un for nix or he'll make me work harder!

I have an older 8274 - will try and take a pic later tonight (when I finally get home). Mine cost me $500 - but I had to drive from Perth to Dubbo (NSW) to collect it

Ignore the 1/2 tonne of steel the PO has added on.

Ben,
That end plate casting is just the sort mine has, same material, webs etc and the brake is the same.
Thanks.
If its worth a trip to Dubbo to pick one up that you still had to pay for...well there's either more to the story involving a good looking bird or they are sold as often as Isuzu Countys :D

EDIT BTW Ben you have over 1000 thankyous now

:D nah - I was going to tassie and back via Sydney anyway. I just remembered that I carted a 2nd 8274 from Tassie-Perth for Offender90 on that trip as well!

I just noticed the thankyous as well!!! :D

IMHO the highmounts are better winches than the lowmounts. Though only rated at 8000lb, they will pull harder than higher rated lowmounts because of less thermal issues.

Some don't have the free spool knob on the side, but it is probably easier to power out.

Parts are still available for the old ones.

They do have brake problems - worn and cracked friction discs, circlip coming off when worked hard, worn bearings, seized with corrosion through long neglect.

There are several easy mods to fix most issues and make them better.

Cheers John,
When i'm ready to pull it apart I might pick your brains for hints and tips to make the most of it if thats alright.
Apparently rebuilding starts around $400 and goes up from there, im fiscally challenged so shall do it myself as much as I can.
