101 Fuel Consumption

I have been monitoring the fuel consumption in my 101 on both LPG and petrol.

LPG is 28.7 l/100km which is 9.94mpg
Petrol is 27.8l/100km which is 10.2mpg

This is mixed driving including high speed cruising on the freeway (90kph:cool:), around town, and 4wd offroad including come low range. What is interesting is that the fuel consumption does not seem to change much with different conditions including low range work. Lower speed, lower geared work seems to give similar consumption as higher speed highway work where the load of pushing the brick through the air comes into play. Best fuel consumption seems to be around 60-70kph.

When on the freeway - I get about 10% better if overdrive is engaged.

So what are other 101 owners getting?

I know of people who aren't getting much better than that in V8 RRc and Discos.

In fact there was a couple out at LVS one day who had been to all the regular Sydney metro Land Rover service centres attempting to get the fuel consumption down from 27L/100K on petrol.

I get around 18-20 on petrol 19-21 on LPG in my RRc 4.6.

Come on Gary, you should know by now that fuel consumption, or using more of it than most, is a 101 specialty and should not be an issue. Just stick your head out the window and hit the accelerator a bit harder and all thoughts of how expensive a 101 is to run will go away as you listen to the music from the exhaust!!

Now I have a 3.9 ISUUZOO and LT85 combination that might fit. that might improve it to 18 mpg!

In service at RAEME Trg Centre we got a bit better than that, around the 12 to 14 mpg matching or bettering the FJ45's of the day. A good tune may get you a little bit more per tank with the carbies adjusted and balanced properly. It might also be worthwhile checking the needles to check they aren't worn, as this is common on LPG stromies. If so a needle and seat replacement may help claw that little back.

A dual curve distributor module would also help, see the RPI website for details.

Home all weekend working on the 86” if you want to help? I’m hoping to get the chassis in paint – if that wet stuff stops falling out of the sky!

Hi Rick,

Not worried about fuel consumption - the 101 club in the UK has a similar thread going and my fuel consumption seems to be about the same as they are getting. Just interested what other 101s are managing out here. I haven't played around with the carbies as yet and I do have to get some work done in that area before too long. It will get a full checkup before the Outback Heritage Run and I will get all that stuff checked then.

Would love to make the trip to the northern suburbs of Cooma to check out your 86 - will send you a PM or something.
